Overview

Under direction of the Detention Division Chief, assists in planning, managing, and overseeing the daily operations at the Alpharetta City Jail; coordinates assigned activities with other departments and outside agencies; provides administrative support to the Detention Division Chief. Responsibilities

Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: develops and oversees employee work schedules, manages timesheets, resolves employee concerns, assists with or completes performance appraisals, directs work, liaises between employees and management, and trains staff in operations, policies, and procedures. Organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work; ensures subordinates have resources; monitors progress; assists with complex situations; provides reports to management; revises procedure manuals as appropriate. Enforces jail rules and regulations; ensures safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates. Supervises intake of inmates: explains rules, conducts searches, inventories property, prepares in-processing documentation, photographs/prints, obtains GCIC background reports, conducts interviews, documents histories, and answers questions from prisoners. Determines inmate classifications; manages housing assignments; issues clothing, bedding, and hygiene items. Monitors inmate activities, conducts headcounts, handles medical/sick calls, controls movements, manages inmate workers, and transports inmates as assigned. Coordinates health, safety, and welfare functions for inmates, including meals, clothing, medical aid, visitation, and mail distribution. Maintains security of the facility: conducts security checks, monitors video, inspects doors, conducts drills, searches for contraband, and assists in restraining violent prisoners. Supervises inmate visitation, meals, and medical calls; reports unusual observations; oversees cleaning of inmate quarters. Monitors radio communications; responds to emergencies; operates fire suppression equipment; provides first aid/CPR as required. Supervises prisoner release procedures; prepares out-processing documentation; runs GCIC reports; handles releases per bond, case termination, or probation. Responds to questions and requests for information from inmates, the public, court personnel, medical staff, attorneys, clergy, and staff. Ensures inmates with special needs receive required attention (e.g., contagious disease, suicidal tendencies, or medical problems). Supervises dispute mediation between inmates and staff; conducts GCIC checks on arrestees and manages related data. Conduces shift meetings, seminars, and training to maintain departmental knowledge and policy compliance. Assists in developing and administering the budget; prepares budget requests and monitors expenditures. Performs related administrative duties; maintains statistics/records and generates reports; ensures licensures and certifications for staff are current. Maintains knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures; stays informed on equipment, procedures, trends, and continuing education. Processes documentation related to operations, including compstat sheets, rosters, inventory, incident reports, logs, and medical sheets; prepares forms and reports as needed. Operates law enforcement equipment and standard office equipment; uses computers and software for data entry, retrieval, and communication. Communicates with supervisors, staff, inmates, clergy, attorneys, the public, and others to coordinate activities and resolve issues. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of jail administration, inmate rights, supervisory principles, and jail security. Decision making, problem solving, public relations, and communication skills. Budgeting, program development, and administration skills; familiarity with laws and regulations affecting jail operations. Ability to supervise, train, evaluate staff, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders; manage emergencies; operate office and law enforcement equipment; and maintain professional relationships. Required Education and Experience Associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in criminology, criminal justice, business administration, public administration, or related field. Three years of related experience, including one year of supervisory experience in jail or prison operations; experience in planning, budget, personnel, and report preparation. Basic Jail Officer Certification, CPR, and First Aid. Ability to meet Georgia Police Standards and Training Council requirements for Certified Jailer. Valid Georgia Class C driver’s license with satisfactory driving record. Physical Demands & Work Environment
