The Seattle Section of the Torts Division has an immediate opening for a trial attorney eager to practice in state and federal courts throughout Washington. The Torts Division represents State agencies and State employees who do the hard work of serving the citizens of Washington when they are sued for damages. Attorneys in the Torts Division handle cases from inception through resolution, with support from professional staff and investigators, and opportunities for training and development. The Torts Division is a collaborative team that supports growth as an oral and written advocate. The Seattle Office is located in the Bank of America Fifth Avenue Plaza building in downtown Seattle. The Division also has offices in Tacoma, Olympia (Tumwater), and Spokane, and provides opportunities for telework in a hybrid work environment.

Position

The Torts Division seeks a trial attorney to practice in state and federal courts throughout Washington. The attorney will defend tort claims against state agencies, officers, and employees and provide legal and risk management advice to client agencies on tort matters. Attorneys manage cases from inception through resolution with support from a team of professionals and investigators.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute legal strategy for tort cases, including discovery, trial preparation, and appeals. Lead trial teams, coordinate with investigators and support staff, and conduct jury and bench trials. Advise client agencies and risk managers on tort matters and risk assessment. Engage in a broad range of tort theories, including premises liability, medical negligence, employment discrimination and retaliation, motor vehicle accidents, maritime injuries, and more. Represent state interests in both state and federal court settings and handle related appellate work.

Qualifications

Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice in Washington state (or actively pursuing admission by motion). Strong analytical, advocacy, and problem-solving skills; excellent legal judgment; ability to work collaboratively with litigation staff, client agencies, risk managers, and other AGO attorneys. Five or more years of progressive legal experience, including civil litigation; experience taking and defending depositions; active civil motions practice; working with expert witnesses; engaging in alternative dispute resolution; trying cases in state and/or federal court; briefing and arguing cases on appeal; interaction with high-level client representatives; and working with diverse clients and colleagues. Experience in civil litigation is advantageous but not essential.

Salary, Benefits, and Professional Development

Salary ranges for the Assistant Attorney General position are set between $82,212 and $153,996, with steps and ranges described in the AGO salary schedule. King County locations are eligible for a 5% King County Assignment Pay.
