General Summary of Position The Lead Endoscopy Technician provides advanced support, orientation, training, and supervision for technicians, and advanced care to patients during pediatric procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Performs, participates, and supervises Endo Technician duties. Demonstrates ability to utilize and troubleshoot specialty Endo equipment; assists clinical nurse with patient preparation, including placement of monitoring equipment; maintains patient confidentiality and privacy at all times; demonstrates proper handling of tissue samples, assisting clinical nurse with proper labeling and documentation; demonstrates knowledge of care and handling of endoscopes; assures cleaning procedures meet infection control guidelines; adheres to unit documentation of scope number, wash load number, leakage test results and chemical testing; maintains knowledge of GI anatomy and precautions needed during insertion and advancement of scopes; assists during emergencies such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest and bleeding; provides physician assistance during EGD/PEG, colonoscopy, and other pediatric procedures.

Assists in selecting, training, orienting, and supervising Endo Technicians. Participates in interviews of job candidates and makes hiring recommendations to the department manager. Plans in-service training for new technicians, ensuring proper orientation of technical associates and assists in the coordination of their in-house continuing education program. Assists in scheduling work and time off to ensure adequate coverage at all times, including on-call coverage for Endo cases. Interacts with Nurse Manager to coordinate technical personnel activities.

Troubleshoots minor equipment problems; refers major equipment problems to Biomedical Engineering and IT Departments.

Oversees the monitoring and documentation of all Endo equipment for safety, quality control, preventative maintenance, and cleanliness while ensuring that standards of infection control are met. Initiates or makes recommendations for personnel actions. Maintains ongoing communication with technicians to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments and exchange information.

Assists in inventory and ordering of supplies for the department. Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available. Identifies product needs for special orders to the department manager. Participates in annual inventory.

Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

Participates in quality review programs by monitoring technical staff. Assists with developing new work methodologies to improve the quality of service rendered. Assists with staff in-servicing on new equipment and procedures. Develops policies and procedures in conjunction with the Department Manager.

Supervises the referral, pre-certification and authorization process for the department including staff adherence to all GPG, GUH and Managed Care Department requirements and contracts to ensure all patient appointments have required approvals in advance of the appointment. Determines in conjunction with the provider if an appointment can be rescheduled if there is a missing referral, pre-certification, or authorization.

Supervises communications with insurance companies, patients and providers regarding eligibility verification, benefits and deductible status, and authorizations for office-based and Hospital services, procedures and admissions. Ensures coordination with the PFCU in obtaining any missing information for patient appointments. Ensures that eligibility and applicable authorizations are obtained prior to services being rendered for any and all accounts not previously verified through the PFCU.

Supervises documentation of referrals and authorizations in the approved organization electronic scheduling and billing systems. Ensures staff adherence to correct use of all applicable data fields in the Open Referral Module and on the Appointment Data Form (ADF).

Provides training and education of staff on managed care contracts and processes, system utilization of the approved organization electronic scheduling and billing system, Joint Commission standards, and HIPAA privacy guidelines and compliance issues. Responsible for ensuring staff adherence to GPG, GUH and departmental policies and procedures for access to patient Medical Records / EHR.

Supervises Scheduler, Front Desk, Administrative Support and Department Pre-certification / Authorization staff utilization of MR / EHR, ensuring protocols are followed. Monitors staff phone notes, prescription requests, and other EHR updates for timeliness and appropriateness.

Participates in internal chart audits and monitoring of chart activity, including complete patient intakes/dictations, problem lists and disposition notes. Coordinates storage of files and maintains database for inactive patient charts.

Oversees technology initiatives, including EHR implementation projects and ongoing performance enhancements. Audits staff productivity and utilization of EHR and billing system, to include indexing, scanning, phone notes, files in error and other appropriate measures of staff productivity.

Collaborates with health care team members, including physicians, social workers, residents and other clinicians, as well as the Department Administrator and Patient Services Manager, to identify barriers to efficient, quality service. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of measures to enhance services provided in the clinic. Assists with planning, developing, and implementing new policies and procedures for an outpatient clinic.

Responds to patient complaints and facilitates resolution of service breakdowns. Monitors patient satisfaction results, reviews with staff and collaborates in process improvements.

Monitors clinical facility needs and space to ensure a clean, safe environment for patients. Orders required supplies, including encounter forms, HIPAA booklets, Patient Rights and Responsibilities sheets, and office supplies.

Participates in front-end clinic operations, including but not limited to answering phones, scheduling appointments, greeting and registering patients, collecting patient financial responsibilities, verifying benefits, confirming appointments, and communicating schedules with clinicians. Provides backup coverage for clinic operations.

Participates in the management and education of staff regarding Joint Commission standards, Patient Safety initiatives, Patient Rights, and HIPAA Privacy standards. Follows care, documentation and cleanliness standards in the performance of job duties. Completes in-services and education on a timely basis. Is focused on patient safety during performance of duties and improves or makes corrections when safety issues arise; notifies department manager as required. Interacts with other team members to benefit the patient. Adheres to all Joint Commission and GUH Patient Rights standards.

Actively participates in departmental and hospital meetings and represents the department at GUH & GPG User Meetings. Relays relevant information to front-desk staff, provides training and documents as appropriate, and completes required projects/assignments. Participates in meetings and committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.

Minimum Qualifications Education

High School Diploma or GED required

Specialized and/or advanced clerical, technical or other vocational training acquired during 1-2 years of additional job-related training required

Associate's degree preferred

Experience

1-2 years Gastroenterology Technician training required

1-2 years experience as a technician in rendering pediatric procedures required

Licenses and Certifications

CPR - Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association or American Red Cross within 90 days required

Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary within 90 days required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Requires the use of specialized medical equipment (i.e., EEG, EKG, blood analyzer), or data processing equipment (i.e., tape drives, consoles)

This position has a hiring range of $22.04 - $38.41
