Section Chief of Vascular Surgery and Director of Aortic Center, Carilion Clinic – Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Roanoke, VA The Department of Surgery at Carilion Clinic – Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (CC-VTCSOM) in Roanoke, Virginia is recruiting a Board Certified Vascular Surgeon to lead the Section of Vascular Surgery. The Chief will lead a team of six surgeons and seven advanced practice providers in a clinic-based academic program with opportunities in teaching, research, and clinical surgery. The ideal candidate will have both complex endovascular and open surgical skills, an excellent track record in managing advanced aortic pathology, and a collaborative approach to patient care. The clinical practice is located at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the flagship facility with a dedicated Cardiovascular Institute (CVI). The role includes direct patient care, reading noninvasive vascular labs, outpatient visits, procedures, and inpatient consultations. In July 2025, the Crystal Spring Tower, the new home of the Carilion CVI, opened. The facility includes 7 dedicated cardiovascular operating rooms (3 Cardiothoracic, 2 Hybrid Endovascular, 2 General Vascular), 76 inpatient beds, 9 EP and Cath Labs, MRI, CT, and non-invasive diagnostic testing. Teaching/Research : Education and research opportunities arise through relationships with VTCSOM, the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) at VTC, Virginia Tech, and Radford University. Faculty are involved in educating medical students, residents from multiple CC-VTCSOM training programs, allied health students, and Virginia Tech undergraduates and graduates. The faculty currently provides clinical training for general surgery residents, plastic surgery residents, integrated cardiothoracic surgery residents (University of Virginia), and surgical critical care fellows. is a unique partnership between Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic and is a fully LCME-accredited four-year medical school. VTCSOM emphasizes a curriculum across basic science, clinical science, research, and interprofessionalism, with an emphasis on real patient cases and research projects for students. The school offers opportunities to earn a graduate certificate in research from Virginia Tech alongside an M.D. degree. Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC
(FBRI) is Virginia Tech’s dedicated biomedical research institute, hosting multiple research teams with substantial extramural funding and a broad portfolio of cardiovascular and related research initiatives. The institute has grown significantly and supports interdisciplinary collaboration and translational work. Administrative/Clinical responsibilities : The Chief will direct clinical, educational, and research activities for the Section, leading a dynamic multi-disciplinary group practice delivering comprehensive vascular, aortic, and endovascular care in close collaboration with Carilion’s cardiothoracic surgery teams. Other requirements : MD/DO Residency or Fellowship Training in Vascular Surgery Robust experience in complex endovascular aortic interventions Board Certification in Vascular Surgery Academic appointment at VTCSOM At least 5 years of progressive surgical leadership in an academic setting with an academic rank of Associate Professor or higher Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills Physician leadership experience with team-building and integrated models of care, education, and research Experience with graduate medical education is preferred About the area : The Roanoke Valley is a metro area of approximately 300,000 residents, with access to outdoor activities in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, and cultural offerings including dining, music venues, and symphony/orchestra.
