UC San Diego Health is Magnet-designated. Position under the Division Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery tasked with providing full clinical support, planning and evaluating treatments for cardiac and thoracic surgery patients, and acting as a liaison to counselors, social workers, research nurses, and other healthcare personnel. Supervision will be provided by attending surgeons or chief residents. The role emphasizes comprehensive care of the cardiothoracic patient across perioperative settings and may involve participation in research and quality assurance activities. Note: Depending on experience, the position may be hired at the NPI or NPII level. While not required, a cover letter is highly recommended when applying. Minimum Qualifications
Must be a graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program. California RN license, California NP license, and Furnishing License Certification. Current UCSD ART certification, or BLS and ACLS certifications at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within six (6) months of hire date. Acute Care NP Certification (AGACNP or ACNP). Must have recent Cardiothoracic Surgery NP experience; or Cardiothoracic Surgery floor or ICU RN experience. Strong theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, therapeutics, and related areas. Ability to perform initial history and physical examination and formulate plans of action. Proficiency with relevant medical equipment and procedures (e.g., chest tube management, ventilator management, central lines, cardiac monitoring, etc.). Ability to work in outpatient and post-op inpatient settings; strong documentation and communication skills; ability to instruct residents, students, and staff. Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to coordinate care and write orders for treatment plans. Ability to assess patient status and communicate with physicians and care team effectively. Knowledge of treatment modalities and ability to document nursing/medical assessments accurately. Special Conditions
Must be willing to work flexible, variable hours with short notice schedule changes based on Center needs. Some weekend work; overtime as needed. No on-call required. Employment subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years. Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at NPIII level pending review. Pay and Benefits
