Overview

Position: Cardiothoracic Nurse Practitioner (NP) at UC San Diego Health. Filing Deadline: Tue 9/23/2025. Location: 9300 Campus Point Dr, La Jolla, CA, 92037. Under the direction of the Division Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, the incumbent provides patient care in Cardiothoracic Surgery/Intensive Care Units, supports inpatient and outpatient procedures, plans and evaluates treatments for cardiac and thoracic surgery patients, and functions as an assistant in outpatient clinics and on wards, in coordination with established surgical services. Supervision is by assigned attending surgeons or chief residents. The role emphasizes complete care of the cardiothoracic surgical patient across pre-, peri-, and post-operative settings, participates in research/quality assurance, and serves as a liaison to counselors, social workers, and research nurses. Special knowledge and skills are required in cardiac surgery, thoracic surgery, and wound care. New graduates with less than six months of NP experience should apply to job #136705. Provide full clinical support in the management of inpatient and outpatient procedures and clinical needs for cardiothoracic patients. Plan, implement and evaluate healthcare treatments; manage pre-, peri-, and post-operative care. Function as an assistant in outpatient clinics and on hospital wards; coordinate with surgical services. Participate in ongoing research and quality assurance studies; liaise with counselors, social workers, and research nurses. Maintain knowledge in cardiac and thoracic surgery, wound care, and related clinical practices. Minimum Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nurse practitioner program. California RN license, California NP license, and Furnishing License Certification. Current UCSD ART certification, or BLS and ACLS at time of hire with commitment to obtain ART within six months of hire date. Acute Care NP Certification (AGACNP or ACNP). Minimum one year recent Cardiothoracic Surgery NP experience. Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency and critical care medicine, therapeutics, and related areas. Ability to perform history taking and physical examinations, identify major medical problems, and develop plans of action. Ability to work in outpatient clinic and post-op inpatient settings; maintain organized medical records; knowledge of operating room standards. Strong written communication for reports, lab data, progress notes, and care protocols. Ability to perform medical procedures for diagnostics and therapy; counsel patients and families effectively. Excellent communication with patients and health care personnel; maintain good working relationships with physicians and staff. Ability to write orders for inpatient/outpatient plans of treatment; clear multi-person communication. Assess daily status of patients and report to physician-in-charge and care team. Knowledge of treatments and modalities used in patient care; accurate nursing/medical documentation. Preferred Qualifications

Two (2+) or more years of Cardiothoracic Surgery NP experience. Ability to instruct housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses and others in acute and chronic care. Skill to operate specialized medical equipment (e.g., chest tube management, ventilators, central lines, pacing, monitoring, and related tools). Special Conditions

Willingness to work flexible hours and adapt schedules on short notice based on hospital needs. Some weekend work; overtime as needed; no on-call required. Subject to criminal background check and pre-employment physical. Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain; clinical advanced practice experience within last two years.
