The primary role of the Director of Business Development position is to drive the revenue growth of the firm, enhance brand awareness through key initiatives and manage the Business Development and Proposals Teams throughout the US.
This leadership position is responsible for driving strategy across the firm's industry and practice groups. This position is expected to be a creative and motivating force in the development of the business development and proposal teams, guiding the implementation of comprehensive, firm-wide business development strategies.
The success of the Director of Business Development will be directly related to the ability to be a change agent and exercise leadership while working with and on behalf of stakeholders throughout the firm. This role will collaborate with the Chief Business Development Officer, Senior Director of Marketing & Communications and partner leadership to create, articulate and implement short- and long-term strategies to strengthen brand awareness, enhance client relationships and generate new revenue.
Responsibilities
Lead the development, execution and review of the relevant strategies and related initiatives for the related practices and lawyers.
Lead and drive related revenue generation initiatives including client targeting, market research, responses to RFPs, and client relationship reviews.
Work with communications, brand, and award and recognition teams to develop and execute strategic visibility initiatives and build brand awareness.
Lead team efforts related to strategic key clients including providing direction, infrastructure, KPIs and metrics for the relevant initiatives.
Build, manage and lead a highly effective team of marketing and business development professionals located across the U.S.
Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships with firm-wide industry leaders, practice group leaders, managing directors and the broader department.
Collaborate across teams to elevate matter collection and streamline knowledge management processes for client-facing material.
Coach and develop team, mentoring, training or otherwise helping to improve knowledge and skillsets.
Guide, direct and motivate the team, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
Identify and develop best practices across the department; establish long-range objectives and the strategies to achieve them.
Position Requirements
4-year degree with major coursework in marketing, communications or related field required; Master's degree preferred; Industry certifications preferred.
15 years' progressive expertise in marketing and business development required; substantial experience leading company-wide initiatives within a multi-office setting, preferably in a professional services firm environment.
Strong business development abilities including setting priorities, planning, organization, follow-through, delegation and negotiation skills; ability to build, manage and track budgets and analyze ROI.
Ability to motivate attorneys to engage in business development and to work with them to develop and implement plans.
Experience providing a high level of client service to individuals at all levels of an organization.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write and produce compelling proposals, collateral, research reports and client-facing presentation materials.
Forward-thinking with proven ability to deliver solutions to complex challenges; high level of maturity and confidence to interact with sophisticated clients.
Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office products; strong background in business development and marketing technology, tools, processes and innovation.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to build consensus and generate enthusiasm for initiatives.
Team-first approach with experience managing a large, geographically diverse team.
Dynamic energy, proactive leadership, results-oriented client service mindset, and ability to adapt to changing demands.
Strong leadership to guide, manage and inspire the team and to implement strategies aligned with the firm’s objectives.

The exact compensation will vary based on skills, experience, location, and other factors permitted by law. The expected compensation ranges for this position in various states and jurisdictions are as follows:

State of Colorado: $154,000 - $274,000
State of Illinois: $151,000 - $239,000
State of Massachusetts: $167,000 - $319,000
State of Maryland: $162,000 - $245,000
State of Minnesota: $167,000 - $276,000
Jersey City, NJ: $181,000 - $328,000
State of New York: $155,000 - $335,000
State of Vermont: $165,000 - $316,000
State of Washington: $162,000 - $307,000
Washington, D.C.: $215,000 - $316,000
The above salaries do not include a discretionary bonus; bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed and depend on individual and firm performance.
