Long Beach is a charter city formed in 1897, governed by nine City Council Members elected by district and a city-wide elected Mayor. Other elected officials include the City Attorney, City Auditor, and City Prosecutor. The City Manager administers City departments, with the City Manager and City Clerk appointed by the Council. Long Beach operates a Health Department, Utilities Department (Water and Gas), and Energy Resources Departments. The City’s FY 2024 total budget is approximately $3.3 billion with a General Fund budget of $719 million. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is classified as a small hub airport and serves approximately four million passengers annually. Owned and operated by the City of Long Beach, LGB was established in 1923 and is one of the oldest municipal airports. Known as the Coolest Airport in America, LGB offers convenient flight schedules, strong airline options, and accessibility. The Airport is committed to delivering an outstanding customer experience in an intelligent, eco-friendly, safe, and efficient manner while respecting employees and the community. The Airport aims to recruit, develop, and retain talented staff to support organizational success. The Airport employs approximately 125 staff with an annual operating budget of about $28 million. The Airport Department is governed by the City Council; the Airport Director is appointed by the City Manager and supported by a Deputy Director, Manager of Airport Operations and Facilities, Manager of Finance and Administration, and a Public Affairs Officer reporting to the Deputy Director. THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Airport Deputy Director, the Public Affairs Officer (PAO) is an at-will employee who manages Public Affairs, Government Affairs, and Community Affairs engagement for Long Beach Airport (LGB). The PAO Coordinates and facilitates communication between LGB, the public, business customers, tenants, and federal, state, and local agencies. The PAO’s mission is to establish and maintain two-way communications with the traveling public, news media, the travel and tourism industry, and other stakeholder audiences regarding LGB policies, procedures, services, operations, developments, and future plans. The PAO keeps Councilmembers, the Mayor, the City Manager, and senior management updated on LGB issues and concerns. The PAO also aims to influence public policy affecting LGB and demonstrate how LGB provides a positive economic impact through educational programs, events, and timely information. Functions are performed by the PAO, through subordinates or in concert with others, within broad policy guidelines. The PAO is responsible for, among others: All media communications Web content management Creation and design of compelling and informative documents Event planning Coordination of ambassador and tour guide volunteer programs Development of recommendations on City and/or Airport positions regarding regulatory and legislative proposals Execution of an environmental communications program to demonstrate LGB’s commitment to sustainability Day-to-day decisions affecting LGB’s Public Affairs, Governmental Affairs, and Community Relations needs Other duties as required EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of recent progressively responsible experience, including two (2) or more years of recent supervisory experience, in public relations, governmental affairs, and/or public administration. EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Governmental Affairs, Public Administration or closely related field is required. A combination of education/experience can be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Airport experience is highly desirable. A master’s degree is desirable. THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING
