Overview
The Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in the areas of virology and microbial pathogenesis. Applicants working in virology, including molecular virology, viral pathogenesis, emerging viral pathogens, and novel models of viral disease, are encouraged to apply. The position will be part of a State University of New York Empire Innovation Program that seeks to build cross-disciplinary collaborations to advance disease prevention and treatment. Applicants incorporating antiviral or antimicrobial drug development or novel therapeutic approaches against infections are particularly encouraged to apply. Successful applicants are expected to establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program and actively participate in the teaching and service missions within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stony Brook University. The position includes a competitive start-up package, excellent fringe benefits, modern office and research laboratory space, and access to state-of-the-art core services, instrumentation, and facilities. The Department along with the adjacent Center for Infectious Diseases provides a highly interactive scientific community through collaborative interactions with faculty throughout the Renaissance School of Medicine and University. The Department is home to two graduate programs and two NIH-funded training grants, offering opportunities for graduate student and postdoctoral fellow mentoring and support. Stony Brook University maintains state-of-the-art core facilities supporting microscopy and animal imaging, flow cytometry, RNA and single-cell sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, and animal maintenance. A state-of-the-art Laboratory for Comparative Medicine provides facilities for BSL3 and animal BSL3 research. The intellectual environment includes collaboration with Stony Brook University Hospital and Cancer Center, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a VA Hospital and Research Center, and Brookhaven National Laboratory facilities. Responsibilities
Establish and maintain an extramurally funded research program in virology and/or microbial pathogenesis. Contribute to the teaching and service missions within the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. Engage in collaboration within the Empire Innovation Program to advance disease prevention and treatment. Participate in mentoring graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
Qualifications
Required:
PhD or MD degree (or foreign equivalent) and three years or more of experience at the Assistant Professor level or equivalent experience as a project leader. Preferred:
Research interests that complement and expand departmental strengths in virology, microbiology, and infectious diseases, and that incorporate translational antimicrobial or antiviral therapeutic approaches. A track record of research, publications, and extramural funding is preferred. Applicants working in virology are particularly encouraged to apply.
