Responsibilities The Neonatal Physician Assistant (PA) provides primary care for the high-risk neonate and participates in educational programs related to the high-risk neonate and their family. The PA functions from birth through discharge: collaborates with and is under the direct supervision of an attending neonatologist; plans and presents in-service education to groups within the medical center and the community; writes and implements policies and procedures regarding care of the high-risk neonate; participates in and may initiate research studies.
Under supervision of the Neonatal Director, the PA directs patient care of neonates by 4th year medical students and orients/directs patient care of neonates by interns during their rotation. They manage a caseload of critically ill neonates, act as a liaison with other departments and community agencies, and contribute to guidelines and orientation materials. They teach courses on neonatal care to medical students and interns, lead formal patient care conferences and rounds in the absence of the Fellow or attending, participate in external transports for critical newborns, and may lead resuscitation in high-risk deliveries.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications
Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
Physician Assistant (PA) License issued by the State of California and Physician Assistant.
Current PA Certification from NCCPA.
NRP certification.
BLS/CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within 6 months of hire date.
Two (2) years of recent work experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in a Neonatal ICU, including attending high-risk deliveries.
Demonstrated ability to perform a comprehensive neonatal assessment and general medical examination, identify medical problems, and formulate an appropriate plan; ability to see patients independently.
Experience providing patient education and counseling, and developing and implementing long and short-range treatment plans.
Proficiency in documentation of patient conditions and outcomes.
Knowledge of diagnostic tests/procedures, scheduling and obtaining necessary requisitions and consents.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to interact effectively with staff, physicians, patients and the public.
Ability to work under fluctuating workload and frequent interruptions.
Strong computer skills and knowledge of PCIS/Epic for patient data retrieval.
Experience in a clinical research environment and ability to identify potential clinical trial patients.
Knowledge of study formats, editing charts, and resolving inconsistencies.
Experience in research techniques, following protocols, and precise data collection.
Preferred Qualifications
More than two (2) years of recent work experience as a licensed Physician Assistant in NICU.
Delivery room experience.
Level III/IV NICU experience.
Work experience in an Academic Medical Center.
PICC certification.
Spanish language proficiency.
Special Conditions
Work locations are primarily UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center.
Must be able to work various hours, days, shifts, on-call and locations based on the 24-hour Medical Center's business needs.
Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.
Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two (2) years.
Pay and Benefits Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $153,259 - $201,889 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $73.40 - $96.69
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
