Location: 9300 Campus Point Dr, La Jolla, CA, 92037 Job Title: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NP) - NP, CNAs, and related roles referenced in posting UC San Diego Health is Magnet designated and highly values equity, diversity, and inclusion. The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner provides primary care for the high‑risk neonate and participates in educational programs related to the high‑risk neonate and their family. The NP works under the supervision of an attending neonatologist, develops educational content, writes and implements policies and procedures, and participates in or initiates research studies. Under the Neonatal Director, NNPs direct patient care for neonates managed by 4th year medical students and orient interns during their rotation.

Responsibilities

Provide primary care for high‑risk neonates from birth through discharge, in collaboration with attending neonatologists and other team members.

Manage a caseload of critically ill neonates; act as liaison with other departments, community agencies, and consultants.

Develop and present in‑service education for staff and in the community; participate in or initiate policy and procedure documentation related to neonatal care.

Lead patient care conferences and rounds in the absence of Fellows or attending physicians; participate in external transports for critical newborns.

Lead resuscitation efforts in high‑risk deliveries and contribute to guideline development and orientation materials for staff and students.

Teach neonatal care topics to medical students and interns; support research activities and identify potential clinical trials patients.

Contribute to documentation, data collection, and the editing of charts to resolve inconsistencies; support the use of PCIS/Epic for patient data retrieval.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited nurse practitioner program.

California RN license, California NP license, and furnishing license certification.

National NP board certification in an aligned specialty with the practice area.

BLS/CPR at time of hire with commitment to obtain BART within six months of hire date.

NRP certification.

Minimum two (2) years of recent work experience as a licensed Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, including attending high‑risk deliveries.

Ability to perform a comprehensive neonatal assessment and general medical examination, identify problems, and formulate action plans. Ability to see patients independently.

Experience in patient education, counseling, and developing long and short‑term treatment plans; strong interview and data collection skills.

Proficiency in documenting patient conditions and outcomes; knowledge of diagnostic tests/procedures and related requisitions and consents.

Strong computer skills with PCIS/Epic experience preferred.

Experience in a clinical research environment and ability to identify potential clinical trial patients; familiarity with study formats and data editing.

Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to work under fluctuating workload and interruptions.

Preferred Qualifications

Five (5+) or more years of NICU RN experience.

Delivery room experience; Level III/IV NICU experience.

Experience in an Academic Medical Center; PICC certification; Spanish language proficiency.

Special Conditions

Work locations are primarily UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Medical Center in La Jolla and Hillcrest Medical Center.

Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre‑employment physical.

Must obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years.

Current UCSD NPIII employees may be hired at the NPIII level pending review and approval.

Pay and Benefits Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range: $167,687 - $234,649 (will be prorated if appointment percentage

If employed, comply with UC policy on Vaccination Programs. Some life‑support certifications may require hands‑on practice and in‑person assessment; online certifications may not be acceptable. UC San Diego Health may require drug screening and background checks where applicable.
