Overview

Early Stages is an evaluation center for children aged 2 years 8 months to 5 years 10 months. We identify delays and disabilities that may impact a child's education. Early Stages is a program of DC Public Schools (DCPS). All our services are FREE. Early Stages can evaluate any DC child who is not attending a DCPS school, including DC children who are homeschooled. We can also evaluate children who are not DC residents if they attend a private school or child care center in DC. We cannot evaluate children enrolled in public charter schools. Open Position Overview: Speech and Language Pathologist The Speech and Language Pathologist will conduct screenings and evaluations in communication for children referred to Early Stages. The Speech and Language Pathologist functions as part of a multi-disciplinary team that collaborates to determine eligibility for special education services and draft Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The Speech and Language Pathologist will not provide treatment services. This position is a 12-month position and will be a member of the Council of School Officers (CSO) union. This position is a safety-sensitive position. As a result, throughout employment this position will be subject to the Employee Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing Policy. The Speech and Language Pathologist (Early Stages) will report to the Director, Early Stages Center. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned. Gathers background information from parents, teachers, administrators, and community partners regarding the communication needs of students as they relate to their education program. Evaluates within the context of a multi-disciplinary team requiring collaboration across providers and other Early Stages staff members. Screens and/or assesses students\' communication needs including articulation, language, fluency, and voice. Selects, administers, scores, and interprets individual speech and communication measures, using instruments and procedures approved by DCPS. Analyzes evaluation data, student records and information pertinent to student learning, and formulates hypotheses and conclusions relating to the referral concerns. Writes reports that are meaningful to parents, teachers, and other stakeholders and complies with DCPS guidelines. Participates in multidisciplinary meetings to review evaluation results, integrate findings with other disciplines, offer recommendations, and develop individual education plans and intervention plans to achieve IEP goals. Reviews and interprets independently generated therapy, medical, and evaluation reports; and serves as a resource in reporting findings to other team members. Prioritizes and schedules work tasks independently. Maintains clinical and administrative records in accordance with professional standards, state guidelines, and school system policy, including maintaining a current license with the DC Department of Health and credential with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education. Adheres to federal and state legislation, regulation, and policies that affect speech and language pathology practice. Travels to other sites within the DC metro area as needed to conduct off-site evaluations, home visits, and other work tasks. Candidate Qualifications

Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology. Candidates must have a District of Columbia Department of Health (DOH) license in the area of Speech-Language Pathology. If the Speech-Language Pathologist currently holds a license in another state, they can obtain their DC Department of Health license through an endorsement process. Eligible for a School Service Provider credential from the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). Proof of ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology or eligible for the certificate (including proof of passing the Praxis national examination in Speech-Language Pathology). Previous experience in the education sector is a plus. Knowledge of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and its impact on the field. A minimum of two years of experience working with children aged six and under who have or are at risk of developmental delays or disabilities. Strong writing and speaking skills and the ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
