Description The Mission of the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is to translate innovation into practice. SDSC adopts and partners on innovations in industry and academia in software, hardware, computational and data sciences, and related areas, and translates them into cyberinfrastructure that solves practical problems across scientific domains and societal endeavors. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of high-performance computing, data, and networking resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC operates multiple large HPC systems and provides research data services, cloud services, and advisory support across on-premise, cloud, and hybrid environments.
SDSC has three geographic scopes: national, California, and campus, supporting cyberinfrastructure for researchers and students. SDSC aims to democratize access to cyberinfrastructure and fosters a culture that supports employees to achieve their goals. The Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) is an independent analysis and research group within UCSD/SDSC.
The Systems and Network Administrator will apply skills as an experienced systems infrastructure professional with a focus on Internet infrastructure measurement opportunities including BGP routing, DNS, and related best practices for CAIDA. Responsibilities include designing, deploying, managing, maintaining, and documenting large-scale data and compute solutions, including computer systems, networking, security, and scripting to sustain infrastructure for Internet measurement research with evolving cybersecurity needs. They will design and implement CI/CD workflows with Ansible IaC, automate processes such as vantage point onboarding and outage notifications, and select big data systems like Apache Kafka for large-scale analysis to support security research. The role includes cost/benefit analyses, virtualization solutions, dashboards, and management of external requests and connectivity issues. The incumbent will also create new metadata and schemas for data sets, enable cloud-based data access, and support compute/storage clusters for Internet Health Report activities.
Additional duties include performing complex security control activities, maintaining inventories and databases, producing internal and public-facing documentation, tracking usage statistics, and providing user support via ticketing systems. Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions to improve performance. Ability to develop and maintain Grafana dashboards for real-time statistics and reporting, including integration of diverse data sources and clear visualizations to support operational decision-making.
Experience writing and editing complex scripts for system maintenance and automation; proficiency in Unix shell scripting (bash) and at least one scripting language (e.g., Perl, Python). Familiarity with common Unix commands and data processing tools (sed, awk, grep, etc.).
Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies, including certificate authority support.
Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) implementations (e.g., Ansible, AWS CloudFormation, Azure).
Demonstrated experience with Unix operating systems (specifically Ubuntu) and related system administration tasks.

Pay Transparency Act: Annual Full Pay Range: $96,862 - $143,947 (prorated if appointment percentage
