The President and CEO

Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Michigan (GSEMI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based in Adrian, Michigan. The organization's vision is that people prosper through the efforts of Goodwill and the community, with a focus on helping people overcome barriers to improve their lives. Our mission is that Goodwill provides exceptional opportunities to people facing barriers. Our programs and business are funded through the collection, processing and sale of donated clothing and household goods along with support from partner organizations. We work closely with Community Mental Health organizations and aim to expand relationships with Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Michigan Works and Intermediate School Districts. Additional information about GSEMI and our programs can be found on our website: www.goodwillsemi.org. The Territory

GSEMI operates within a four-county area in southeastern Michigan encompassing Lenawee and Monroe Counties, the southern half of Hillsdale County and a triangular port of Washtenaw County. Population is about 350,000 with stores in Adrian, Monroe, Lambertville, Saline, Dundee, and a northern border just south of Ann Arbor. The territory is south of Detroit and north of Toledo with no major media outlets (TV) within this area. The Organization

As an independent, autonomous member of Goodwill Industries International, GSEMI is headquartered in Adrian, Michigan and presently has 6 store locations and two training centers within its territory. Growth in retail is limited by population centers, but there is significant opportunity for growth in mission-related services. GSEMI is governed by a Local Board of Directors providing strategic and policy direction. The Board consists of 15-21 members with diverse professional backgrounds. Board terms are three years, with a maximum of two consecutive terms before a one-year non-service period. The Full Board meets bi-monthly. Six committees handle interim Board work: Executive, Finance/Audit, Donor Development, Workforce Development/Human Resources, Donated Goods/Operations, and Nominating. The President & CEO is an ad hoc, non-voting member of each committee. The executive management team assists the President & CEO in providing operational and strategic direction and includes the Vice President of Finance, the Vice President of Workforce Development, and the Vice President of Donated Goods and Operations. The VP Finance joined in December; the VP WFD has 25 years with the organization; the VP DGR has 7 years. GSEMI is financially sound, with net income over the last two years of more than $300,000 and over $1 million since 2014. Annual revenues are budgeted at $6.9 million for 2019. Revenues are split about 60/40 between donated goods revenue and workforce development revenue. Salaries comprise about 59% of operating expenses, with benefits and payroll taxes around 8%. In 2018, GSEMI had an average headcount of about 190 and issued 551 W-2s. GSEMI served 1,568 people in 2018 and targeted at least 2,000 in 2019. The Search

The Board of Directors is seeking a qualified candidate for the role of President & CEO to succeed the incumbent who is planning to retire at the end of 2019. The ideal candidate will be able to step in, take charge of the organization, and continue its growth momentum. Key traits include integrity, vigor and a commitment to advancing the mission throughout the territory. The search process is scheduled to conclude June/July 2019 with an anticipated start date in August, but may be shortened if the right candidate is identified earlier. The Position

The Board expects the new President & CEO to assimilate the activities of the organization, understand the organizational structure, and become familiar with the senior staff during the first months. The organization is on an upward trajectory, and the Board seeks a candidate who can maintain or improve momentum. The Board also emphasizes a strong balance sheet and increasing positive net income, requiring understanding of financial statements and strategies that improve financial strength. The new President & CEO will be the face of the organization in the community and must support and exemplify GSEMI's values and culture. The Board expects the following qualities/characteristics in its President & CEO: a passion for the organization and its mission and vision a supportive approach toward innovation an awareness of the markets for donated goods and mission services an openness and willingness to share knowledge and ideas a focus on collaboration and teamwork, both internal and external an ability to be accessible, fair and sensitive as an administrator superior writing, speaking and listening/communication skills Application information:
