About Mentor A Promise Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a youth-centered nonprofit dedicated to supporting students ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, social-emotional learning, academic enrichment, and creative expression, we create safe, consistent, and empowering spaces for young people to grow, thrive, and succeed. We believe every child deserves a promise kept — and we work every day to make that promise real.
Role Overview We are seeking a Volunteer Finance Director to oversee MAP’s financial strategy, management, and compliance. This role is critical to ensuring the organization maintains transparency, efficiency, and sustainability as we grow. The Finance Director will collaborate with leadership, program teams, and external partners to manage budgets, strengthen financial systems, and support grant and fundraising reporting.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, strategic, and mission-driven, with experience in nonprofit finance and a passion for using their skills to create social impact.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and reporting for MAP’s programs and operations.
Establish and maintain strong financial systems, policies, and internal controls.
Ensure compliance with nonprofit financial regulations and reporting requirements.
Provide financial analysis to guide leadership decisions and organizational strategy.
Collaborate with the Development and Grants team to prepare budgets, track spending, and meet funder requirements.
Monitor cash flow, expenses, and organizational sustainability.
Work with external accountants, auditors, and consultants as needed.
Present regular financial updates to MAP’s leadership and board.
Requirements
Proven experience in nonprofit finance, accounting, or financial management.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit compliance, reporting, and fund accounting.
Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Xero, or similar).
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and organizational abilities.
Commitment to transparency, accountability, and mission-driven work.
Preferred Skills
CPA, MBA, or advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field.
Experience with grant reporting and restricted funding management.
Familiarity with NYC and NYS nonprofit finance regulations.
Previous leadership experience in nonprofit or social-impact organizations.
What You’ll Gain
Hands-on leadership experience overseeing the finances of a growing nonprofit.
Collaboration with a dedicated, mission-driven team.
Opportunity to build financial systems that directly support youth and families experiencing housing instability.
Letters of recommendation and professional references for future opportunities.
How To Apply Please send your resume, LinkedIn profile, and (if available) a summary of relevant finance experience to hr@mentorapromise.org along with a brief statement of interest.
Join us in strengthening the financial foundation that sustains mentorship, education, and hope for NYC’s most vulnerable students.
