Overview
We are seeking a visionary and results-oriented Director of Engineering to lead and manage Project Engineering and Production Engineering functions while supporting the organization's broader technical priorities. This role drives capital projects, enhances manufacturing efficiency, and enables faster, higher-quality technical transfers of pharmaceutical products. The Director will serve the team, focused on developing people, fostering innovation, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
Responsibilities
Leadership of Engineering Teams: Oversee and manage two engineering functions — Project Engineering (Capital Projects) and Production Engineering (Lean Six Sigma & Continuous Improvement).
Project Engineering (Capital Projects): Lead capital projects for formulation processes and high-speed liquid/tablet filling systems.
Production Engineering (Lean Six Sigma & Continuous Improvement): Support production operations and drive ongoing process improvements for safety, efficiency, and cost savings.
Collaboration with Technical Services (Pharma Formulation Development): Own and manage capital expenditure projects for new or scaling formulation processes, working to expedite technical transfers from internal R&D and external sources.
Strategic Focus Areas: Support Technical Transfers to achieve >10% annual revenue growth by ensuring efficient scaling and high-quality introductions of products.
Continuous Improvement: Implement initiatives to drive cost-of-sales savings exceeding 5% annually through Lean Six Sigma principles.
Capital Projects & Safety: Oversee capital projects with safety-focused solutions, aiming to reduce ergonomic risks and achieve a recordable injury rate below 1.0.
Team Development & Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop lead and managerial-level leaders within the engineering teams; cultivate a high-performing, collaborative environment; support professional growth and create a culture of trust and accountability.
Technology & Innovation: Identify, evaluate, and implement new technologies to enhance production capabilities, improve process reliability, and provide a competitive edge; promote innovation in formulation, packaging, and engineering practices in a regulated market.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Leadership: Partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure regulatory and quality requirements are met; collaborate with Technical Services to align capital projects with formulation development goals.
Compliance & Safety: Ensure all engineering activities comply with pharmaceutical regulations (cGMP, FDA, and other standards); advocate for safety-first practices and systems that prioritize well-being and compliance.
Minimum qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Engineering
Minimum of 7+ years in high-speed packaging
At least 5+ years in engineering management roles leading multi-disciplinary teams
Lean Six Sigma Certification (preferred)
In-depth knowledge of pharmaceutical regulations, including cGMP
Strong project management and capital planning experience
Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with a focus on developing people and fostering a team-oriented culture
Demonstrated exceptional project management and organizational skills
Exceptional problem-solving, decision-making, and analytical abilities
Ability to influence, engage, and inspire team members at all levels
Strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence
Ability to mentor, coach, and inspire team members to achieve their potential
Continuous Improvement mindset with a passion for process optimization
