Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is seeking an experienced, Master’s-prepared Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Nurse Practice Specialist (NPS) to lead our independent hemodialysis team and inpatient peritoneal dialysis program. In this role, you will provide bedside clinical support, promote evidence-based care, and ensure adherence to CDC/DPH standards. We’re looking for a collaborative, proactive leader who fosters strong relationships with staff and interdisciplinary teams to support high-quality patient outcomes. The Dialysis Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) or Nurse Practice Specialist (NPS) will lead quality initiatives by analyzing clinical outcomes, reporting data to leadership, and driving continuous improvement. This role ensures compliance with CMS and Joint Commission standards, monitors internal and external quality metrics, and identifies opportunities for enhanced performance. The ideal candidate will serve as the subject matter expert in hemodialysis during regulatory surveys, including those by DPH and the Joint Commission. The CNS or NPS will provide expert consultation, mentor staff, and support professional development through orientation, education, and competency assessment. They will collaborate with nursing and interdisciplinary teams to advance clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and promote a culture of safety and excellence. • Provide consultation services for the inpatient hemodialysis unit as well as inpatient peritoneal dialysis patients. • Build and maintain nursing policies and procedures related to hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. • Build and deliver educational opportunities related to peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. • Performs as the content expert in both CMS and the Joint Commission regulations as it applies to inpatient and ambulatory dialysis services. • Responsible for regulatory reporting and updates in a variety of reporting platforms including EQRS, NHSN, IPRO learning, among others. • Leads quality improvement initiative to optimize the use of the electronic medical record. • Supports physician and nursing leaders as needed on clinical quality initiatives. • Utilizes nursing knowledge to prepare, review data and data collection procedures. Qualifications Requirements: a. Graduation from a graduate degree program with a clinical practicum designed to prepare the graduate for practice as a CNS that is approved by a national accrediting organization for academic programs acceptable to the Board; and b. Successful completion of, at minimum, core content at the graduate level in sophisticated assessment, advanced pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics. c. Current CNS certification granted by a Board recognized certifying organization Nursing Practice Specialist Requirements a. Master’s degree in Nursing or related field. b. must have relevant professional experience in a Dialysis unit. c. Certification in specialty area or willingness to obtain. Job Summary Summary Responsible for developing educational programs, clinical decision-making, management of quality outcomes, and participation in research activities. Provide patient care in the clinical environment, health promotion, disease prevention, health education, and patient and family counseling activities. Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Provides expert-level consultation and advises clinical staff on the formulation of diagnoses and treatment plans for patients and families. -Plans and delivers relevant staff and patient education to nurses and other members of the health care team on matters regarding plan of care for patient and family. -Actively participates in research and evidence-based practice activities that will positively affect patient care outcomes. -Provide health care services to patients. -Forming a diagnosis and management and treatment of illness and disease. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree Nursing required and Master's Degree Nursing required Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No Licenses and Credentials Registered Nurse MA RN license - required Clinical Nurse Specialist CNS - preferred Experience Clinical nursing experience 3-5 years required and Clinical education experience 2-3 years preferred and Nursing leadership experience 1-2 years preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - In-depth knowledge of clinical nursing care practices and principles. - Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills. - Proficiency in developing and implementing evidence-based care plans. - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and families. - Leadership abilities to provide guidance, mentorship, and education to nursing staff. - Ability to stay updated on the latest advancements in nursing skills and patient care through continuous learning and professional development.
