Overview

Clinical Pharmacist role at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Position summary includes supervising the filling and dispensing of medication orders, providing clinical drug information, coordinating with physicians and nurses, training pharmacy staff, and contributing to quality improvement projects within established policies and procedures. Responsibilities/Essential Functions

Provide superior service to internal and external customers and patients in line with CARES Values (compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and stewardship). Provide drug information to and consult with physicians and nurses regarding appropriate drug therapy. Supervise approximately two Pharmacy Technicians and one to three Pharmacy Interns, who handle filling and checking unit-dose medications, inventory control, and input of medication orders. Participate in daily patient rounds offering input on pharmacotherapy, including pharmacologic and pharmacokinetic considerations, adverse effects, and dosage recommendations. Participate in orientation, hiring and training of new personnel. Participate on inter- and intradepartmental committees to coordinate activities across Pharmacy, Nursing, Unit Coordination and physician staff. Interview patients to obtain accurate medical history for the medical record, including prescribed and over-the-counter medications, adverse reactions, and allergies. Participate in investigational drug studies by assisting in dispensing protocols, maintaining drug records, inventory control, dosage formulation, patient monitoring, and regulatory compliance (FDA/DEA). Prepare drug monographs and review drugs for admission to the Hospital Formulary; assist in reviewing drug costs and making adjustments as needed. Act as a preceptor to pharmacy students and conduct in-service education for medical staff, nurses, pharmacists, students and other health care personnel on drugs, procedures and policies. Assist in formulating and updating departmental and pharmacy-nursing policies and procedures. Responsibilities/Non-Essential Functions

Assist with cleaning pharmacy delivery carts, medication bins, shelves, patient medication cassettes and drawers, and other equipment as needed. Perform related duties as needed. Reporting Requirements

Report any deviation of normal operations to the supervisor. Report any unusual occurrences related to patients, staff or technology to the supervisor. Report all incidents and quality-of-care breaches to the Clinical Pharmacy Manager, Pharmacy Operations Manager or Director of Pharmacy. Accountability

Accountable for appropriate drug therapy monitoring. Accountable for maintaining confidentiality and security of hospital-related, medical staff and patient data. Accountable for abiding by all relevant hospital policies and procedures. Accountable for observing department policies and Infection Control procedures. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Training: Doctor of Pharmacy or Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college of pharmacy with 2-5 years hospital pharmacy experience. PGY1 residency preferred. Minimum Experience: A professional level of knowledge generally obtained after a minimum of 2 years hospital pharmacy experience as a registered Pharmacist or completion of a PGY1 residency. Minimum Skills/Abilities: Communication skills required for concise dissemination of information to patients, nurses and physicians. Administrative skills to coordinate personnel and pharmacy operations. Teaching skills for precepting pharmacy students. Analytic and critical thinking skills to assess patients and plan pharmacotherapy. Certification/Licensure: Current registration as a Pharmacist in Massachusetts is required. Training: Training in Aseptic Technique, TPN Compounding, and Safe Handling of Cytotoxic Drugs preferred.
