Pre-Op Physician Assistant - Orthopedic Surgery Pre-Op Physician Assistant role within the Orthopedic Surgery Department responsible for pre-op evaluations and surgical clearances.

Responsibilities / Duties

Provides direct care, counseling and teaching to a designated patient population in the ambulatory, inpatient, operative and/or procedure setting.

Perform comprehensive and problem focused history and physical examination, interpret laboratory and diagnostic procedures, formulate a differential diagnosis and working diagnosis, and develop a management plan for orthopedic problems within scope of practice.

Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures and studies, including but not limited to blood tests, imaging, EMG, electrocardiograms, niche studies, CT, MRI, and bone scans.

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including joint and bursa aspirations, closed reductions of fractures/dislocations, injections, bracing, and cast/splint applications.

Present and discuss findings with the Attending Physician to determine the treatment plan; document the plan and write appropriate orders and referrals.

Coordinate and oversee the clinical experience to ensure integrated patient care plans and effective communication with other departments.

Under the countersignature of the attending physician, produce preoperative and postoperative orders as authorized by law and department protocol.

Write orders for admitted patients, including medications, labs, diagnostics, and nursing activities; may be authorized to write prescription orders including narcotics, stimulants, and depressants as necessary.

Conduct rounds to evaluate patients and write progress reports.

Educate patients and families about preventive care, medical issues, and prescribed treatments, injections, procedures and/or medications.

Record and maintain confidential patient medical records with initial evaluations, follow-ups, progress notes, and discharge information.

Provide pre-operative services including Pre-op H&P and SAFE protocol clearances.

Participate in hospital-level activities representing the department.

Facilitate transitions of care from inpatient to outpatient settings, including medication reconciliation and timely follow-up, and complete discharge summaries.

Assist with admissions and coordination as needed.

Provide faculty support by managing patient requests via phone, MyChart messages, and related paperwork.

May assist in surgery as directed by the surgeon, including first assist, tissue closures, appliance placement, and other delegated actions; conduct rounds, write orders, and respond to patient care needs.

Evaluate clinical conditions, implement treatment plans for hospitalized patients, and prepare H&Ps and discharge summaries.

Support in clinic casting/splinting and wound care as needed.

Ensure treatments and consultations comply with NCQA, JCAHO, and federal/state regulations.

Engage in inpatient orthopedic care, including discharge planning, rounding/monitoring, and bedside procedures.

Collaborate with social work/case management for post-surgical home care planning.

Attend scheduled weekly meetings, departmental rounds, and huddles.

Support research projects as needed.

Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medications, orthoses, braces, and other orthopedic devices as allowed by state law.

Commit to ongoing professional development and stay current with industry standards and practices.

Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital standards of performance and conduct.

Adhere to BMC’s RESPECT standards and hospital cultural beliefs; follow infection control and safety procedures.

Performs other duties related to patient care and practice operations as required.

Education Qualified Physician Assistants will hold at least a Master’s degree and must be a graduate of a PA Program accredited by ARC-PA or its predecessor.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistant (NCCPA) PANCE eligible and eligible for PA licensure in the State of Massachusetts. Documentation of Massachusetts PA license and initial NCCPA certification are required upon hire. Massachusetts Controlled Substances Registration and federal DEA registration are required.

Experience Prior experience in a similar clinical setting/specialty is preferred, but not mandatory.

Knowledge And Skills

Self-directed, initiative, professionalism, and excellent clinical judgment to function independently.

Excellent English communication skills to convey complex medical information to patients, families, physicians, staff, and community health workers.

Problem solving and conflict resolution skills; experience caring for diverse patient populations with varying health literacy is valued.
