Dentist - Correctional
The Dentist is responsible for providing professional dental care to inmates/residents. The successful applicant should be able to perform all the following functions at a pace and level consistent with job requirements: Perform routine dental treatments, including examinations, x-rays, fillings, extractions, cleanings, dentures, and root canals as warranted. Diagnose and develop dental treatment plans for inmates/residents. Develop, coordinate, and supervise the facility's dental program, including advising and instructing on dental disease prevention. Recruit, schedule, train, supervise, and evaluate subordinate staff. Consult with healthcare staff and coordinate emergency or specialized dental care as needed. Manage medications, dental supplies, and equipment according to procedures. Maintain a clean work area, follow sanitation and infection control protocols. Prepare and maintain dental records, reports, and logs accurately and timely. Ensure confidentiality and security of all dental records. Audit dental files for completeness and accuracy. Monitor external contract services and coordinate with external providers. Manage dental budget requests and identify financial responsibilities. Review dental billing records monthly and suggest operational improvements. Audit pharmacy use and ensure compliance with laws, especially regarding controlled substances. Observe and record inmate/resident behavior. Maintain and order dental equipment and supplies, ensuring security and proper disposal of contraband. Monitor safety practices, report incidents, and ensure a safe environment. Participate in seminars and training as required. Accept on-call duties and respond to emergencies. Communicate effectively with staff, inmates, visitors, and the public, especially in sensitive situations. Handle legal documents and coordinate inmate movement for dental care. Conduct investigations, interviews, and exercise judgment in disciplinary actions. Identify inmates visually and perform searches for contraband. Ensure security of facilities and respond to emergencies with appropriate medical aid and evacuation procedures. Apply management techniques to solve administrative problems. Perform mathematical calculations and interpret technical instructions accurately. Comply with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and standards. Remain alert and react effectively in high-stress situations. Qualifications: Graduate of an approved dental school and licensed in the state of employment. At least one year of experience preferred. BLS certification required. Good oral and written communication skills. Driver's license preferred unless required by contract or law. Knowledge of correctional custody methods, rules, and standards.
