Summary This is an open continuous announcement that will remain open until filled. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis. Eligible applicants will be referred each week for consideration until a selection is made.

Duties

Perform assessments/examinations on encounters with all presenting patients.

Order and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests necessary to complete the ED evaluation.

Stabilize all critically ill or injured patients.

Admit patients to the hospital or discharge them from the ED with appropriate follow-up.

Discuss treatment plan with patient and or family/caregiver.

Perform medication reconciliation with all discharged patients.

Perform procedures related to the Emergency Department such as but not limited to basic and advanced airway management, rapid sequence intubation, management of mechanical ventilation, administration of moderate sedation, EKG interpretation, CPR, cardioversion, defibrillation, venous central line placement, intraosseous access, peripheral arterial puncture for ABGs, NGT placement, gastric lavage, gastrostomy and tracheostomy tube replacement, reduction and immobilization of fractures and dislocations, wound care and closure, abscess incision and drainage, lumbar puncture, knee arthrocentesis, anterior nasal packing, peripheral vein catheterization, vaginal pelvic exam and Foley catheterization. Also perform emergency surgical procedures indicated by emergency medical conditions or injuries such as emergent cricothyrotomy and chest tube placement.

Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Some weekends. Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor and may require different shifts based on facility and patient care needs.

Requirements Conditions of Employment

U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

All applicants selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

You may be required to serve a probationary period.

Subject to background/security investigation.

Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. Acceptable form of identification will be required to complete pre-employment requirements. Effective May 7, 2025, REAL ID compliant identification is required for employment.

Must pass pre-employment physical examination.

Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel.

Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or licensing may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.

Education: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an approved school. The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the VA for the year of graduation.

Licensure & Registration: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Residency Training: Completion of a residency approved by the VA in an accredited Emergency Medicine Residency program leading to eligibility for board certification. Note that VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status. Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA or other residencies with appropriate experience as determined by the Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residents enrolled in eligible programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers under certain conditions.

English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in English.

Preferred Experience Board Certification in Emergency Medicine or Board Eligible is highly preferred.

Education Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from LCME- or COCA-accredited schools. For foreign medical graduates not covered above, verification with ECFMG and related certification requirements apply.

Physical Requirements Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019. The position requires lifting up to 44 lbs, carrying up to 15 lbs, frequent reaching above shoulder, use of hands and legs, possible use of protective equipment, and the ability to walk or stand for extended periods. Visual acuity, hearing, speech, and manual dexterity are required. May be exposed to infected patients and contaminants and may require protective clothing. May need to shift priorities based on patient needs. Annual Employee Health requirements, such as TB screening, are required.
