Day/Night General Summary: The Hematologist-Oncologist is responsible for providing care and medical oversight of patients with malignant diseases and hematologic disorders. The Hematologist-Oncologist collaborates with other medical staff to ensure quality services and represents Bayhealth Oncology Service Line to medical staff and the community. The provider delivers oncology services following evidence-based guidelines in a timely manner. Responsibilities: Provides oncology services using evidence-based and substantiated guidelines in a timely manner. Completes all related documentation following Bayhealth policy. Meets with newly diagnosed cancer or benign hematology patients to discuss treatment options. Educates patients and families about the disease, diagnostic procedures, tests, labs, and treatment goals. Sets realistic expectations and communicates treatment plans with team members (Nurse Practitioner, RN Chemotherapy, RN Navigator). Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team (surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, pathology) on the patient’s care plan. Advocates for best practice, guideline-driven patient care in multidisciplinary conferences. Communicates the plan to appropriate team members (e.g., Primary Care). Collects relevant healthcare data, analyzes it to determine patient needs, and ensures proper documentation, diagnosis coding, and charge capture. Participates in Bayhealth’s Clinical Research Program, recommending clinical studies for enrollment or referring patients to tertiary centers. Communicates with Oncology Administration regarding departmental workflows to enhance performance. Contributes to the Oncology Service Line strategic planning and promotes its vision and goals to the community. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibilities. Required Education, Credentials, and Experience: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Completion of recognized internal medicine residency and hematology-oncology fellowship Credentials include Physician MD or DO licensure, Controlled Substance Registration, DEA Diversion Control Division eligibility, and active membership in Bayhealth Medical Staff Experience: No prior experience necessary; board eligible in hematology and oncology. Board certified preferred.
