Overview

The Hematologist-Oncologist is responsible for providing care and medical oversight of patients with malignant diseases and hematologic disorders. The Hematologist-Oncologist collaborates with other medical staff to assure quality services are provided and represents Bayhealth Oncology Service Line to medical staff and the community. The Hematologist-Oncologist provides oncology services using substantiated guidelines in a timely manner. Responsibilities

Provides oncology services using evidence-based and substantiated guidelines in a timely manner. Completes all related documentation following Bayhealth policy. Meets with newly diagnosed cancer patients or benign hematology patients to collaborate on the treatment process. Educates the patient and family regarding the disease process, diagnostic procedures, tests, labs, and goals of the treatment regimens. Identifies realistic goals and potential outcomes for the patient. Communicates the treatment plan with team members (Nurse Practitioner, RN Chemotherapy, RN Navigator) and oversees treatment plan delivery. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team (surgery, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology) on the patient’s plan of care. Advocates for best practice, guideline-driven patient care in multidisciplinary conference settings. Communicates the patient’s plan of care to appropriate team members (e.g., Primary Care). Collects relevant patient healthcare data and analyzes it to determine patient needs. Adheres to Bayhealth policy for completion of related documentation, selection of appropriate diagnosis code, and accurate charge capture. Participates in Bayhealth’s Clinical Research Program to recommend potential clinical research studies for enrollment on-site or refer to an appropriate tertiary setting. Communicates with Oncology Administration related to established workflows within the department to improve performance. Actively participates in the development of the Oncology Service Line strategic plan and promotes the plan’s vision and goals to the community. Performs all other duties as assigned within the scope and range of job responsibilities. Required Education, Credential(s) and Experience

Education: Doctor of Medicine (MD). Must also have completed a recognized internal medicine residency program and hematology-oncology fellowship program. Credential(s): Physician MD, Physician - Controlled Substance Registration, DEA Diversion Control Division, Eligible to become an active member of Bayhealth Medical Staff. Or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) licensure. Experience: Required: No experience necessary. Board eligible in hematology and oncology. Preferred: Board certified in hematology and oncology.
