Overview Animal Laboratory Technician I – Alzheimer\'s Therapeutic Research Institute (ATRI), a satellite facility part of the University of Southern California, located in San Diego. The USC Department of Animal Resources seeks a reliable, dependable, self-motivated, and responsible individual for the Animal Laboratory Technician I role. The department provides optimal animal care for animals housed at the university for biomedical research and teaching.

Must have basic computer skills, the ability to lift 50 pounds, and be on your feet for the majority of the day. The technician will be required to work on a schedule and be on time. A California Driver License is required.

Responsibilities and Duties

Ensures that animals are provided care in accordance with state and federal regulations to promote physical and psychological well-being and minimize discomfort.

Maintains cleanliness and organization of cages, equipment, surgical and storage facilities. Maintains storeroom supplies. Performs routine cleaning of animal lodging facilities. Maintains computerized animal identification records; prepares medical histories on animals.

Prepares and distributes food and water; prepares special diet plans. Exercises larger animals confined to small cages. Treats animals for external and internal parasites. Isolates sick animals and notifies veterinarian; disposes of dead animals.

Collects and processes diagnostic samples. Administers drugs and other treatments. Assists veterinarians and Principal Investigators with handling animals during procedures.

Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications:

Education: Associate Degree

Experience: 2 years

Field of Expertise: Assistant ALT Certification with experience in a veterinary hospital kennel or animal research laboratory

Skills: Animal Handling

Hourly Range: The hourly rate for this position is $21.89. Minimum Education: High school or equivalent

Minimum Experience: 1 year, Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise: Ability to begin educational programs leading to examination at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician level.
