Overview BD is seeking a transformative and execution focused leader to serve as Vice President of R&D for its $2B+ Advanced Access Devices (AAD) and Peripheral Intravenous Catheter (PIVC) portfolio. This global role will lead global R&D teams driving innovation, executional excellence, and customer-centric product development to improve patient outcomes worldwide.

This role reports directly to the Vice President of R&D for Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS) and is a key member of the MDS R&D Leadership Team, contributing to strategic decision-making and cross-platform innovation initiatives. This role will partner with Business Unit and Functional Leaders to ensure seamless integration of AAD and PIVC technologies into MDS. The ideal candidate will be both a strategic thinker and hands-on leader, capable of inspiring teams, delivering results, and building a high-performing, future-ready organization.

Details Opportunity: VP R&D Advanced Access Devices (AAD) and Peripheral Intravenous Catheters (PIVC). Segment: BD Medical. Business: Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS). Mandatory Location: Salt Lake City, Utah (4 days per week min) – relocation assistance provided. Reporting: This VP role reports to the WW Vice President R&D, Medication Delivery Solutions (MDS), Tesh Elavia. Member of the MDS R&D Leadership Team.

Key Responsibilities

Global Leadership: Define and communicate a patient-centered vision that aligns with BD’s mission to advance the world of health.

Lead and align global R&D teams fostering a culture of collaborative execution across geographies.

Executional Rigor in NPD: Oversee the full product development lifecycle, from concept through commercialization. Ensure technical rigor, process discipline, and cross-functional alignment.

Champion the Global Product Development System (GPDS) and drive an execution excellence mindset.

Partner in innovation pipeline development, including early-stage concept development, technology scouting, and advanced development.

Leverage digital technologies, data analytics, and AI/ML where applicable to enhance product performance and clinical outcomes.

Customer Centric Innovation: Build and sustain a robust innovation pipeline for the Advanced Access Devices and PIVC platforms. Identify unmet clinical needs, emerging technologies, and market opportunities to shape BD’s long-term innovation strategy. Engage with customers to inform innovation and product development, integrating diverse perspectives, clinical insights, and market intelligence.

Product Lifecycle Management: Own and oversee the full product lifecycle—from concept through development, launch, post-market support, and end-of-life; ensure alignment with customer needs, regulatory requirements, and business objectives throughout the lifecycle.

Change Leadership: Act as a change agent, driving transformation and agility within the R&D organization. Inspire teams to challenge the status quo and embrace bold innovation.

Talent Strategy: Attract, develop, and retain top-tier talent across global sites. Build leadership pipeline and technical bench through mentorship, career development, and a compelling employee value proposition.

Culture Building: Cultivate a high-performing, inclusive team culture rooted in transparency, collaboration, accountability, and a relentless drive for results.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Marketing, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Operations, Quality, Finance, Legal and other functions as needed to ensure seamless product development, clinical validation, and global commercialization.

Qualifications

Advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field (PhD or Master’s preferred).

15+ years of progressive experience in medical device R&D, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.

Proven success in leading transformational initiatives and building high-performing, mission-driven teams.

Experience managing global teams and navigating cross-cultural collaboration.

Deep understanding of vascular access technologies, infusion therapy, and related clinical environments.

Previous experience with heavy consumable/disposable medical devices.

Strong grasp of global regulatory requirements and design control processes.

Customer mindset (can provide examples of leveraging field insights).

Exceptional communication, strategic thinking, and stakeholder engagement skills.

Preferred Experience

Experience, at scale, with catheter technologies, infusion systems, or vascular access platforms.

Demonstrated ability to lead in matrixed, global organizations.

Track record of delivering customer-centric innovations that drive market growth.
