Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 / Life Science Research Associate (LRSA1) to perform basic functions and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct and analyze experiments. The LRSA1 will join the Mayne Laboratory in the Department of Neurology and work on mouse models of pediatric stroke, studying differences in glial response between juvenile and adult stroke and impacts on long-term cognitive outcomes. The role involves independent research with 5-10% effort on lab management tasks shared across the lab. Excellent communication and collaboration skills and a two-year commitment are essential. Some experience with mouse handling/animal behavior and/or immunohistochemistry or electron microscopy is highly desirable; experience with flow cytometry, myelin biology or lymphocyte biology, and RNA sequencing is desirable. Duties include : Perform complex experiments for a major portion of the research project and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes. Interpret and analyze results, often with few guidelines, and contribute to development or adaptation of protocols. Make recommendations on plan design and research direction to the principal investigator. Apply the theories and methods of a life science discipline to interpret results and suggest procedural modifications in collaboration with a senior researcher. Review literature to stay current and apply learnings to related research. Contribute to preparation of papers for publication and present ongoing work at academic conferences. Supervise staff or students as needed and serve as a technical resource for other research staff. Perform general lab maintenance, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and assist with purchasing equipment. Additional duties may be assigned. Qualifications
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS : Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, cell biology, biological sciences, neuroscience, or related field. Ability to work independently and be highly motivated; well organized; adaptable; effective in a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team; good communication and interpersonal skills. Proficient computer skills (Mac and PC). Prior lab experience is important. Specific valuable techniques include:
Mouse behavior assays (e.g., Barnes maze, novel object tasks) Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining Confocal and electron microscopy RNA preparation, qPCR, RNA-Seq library preparation and analysis Flow cytometry (FlowJo, cytobank) and other immuno-assays (ELISA, IP, bead-based) Statistics Minimum 2-year commitment
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED) : Bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED) : General understanding of scientific principles and ability to apply knowledge to problem solve Ability to maintain detailed records and use computer programs and databases Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting up to 50 pounds; fine manipulation and computer tasks Ability to work in environments with dust, odors, and hazardous materials; use of personal protective equipment Potential to work with animals and blood-borne pathogens; may require extended or unusual hours Working Conditions
