Overview

Under the direction of the Director of Audiology, the Audiologist is responsible for providing a full array of clinical audiology services, and for representing the audiology division in a professional and competent fashion. This role applies to both adult and pediatric Audiologist functions in the clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites (Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, Parnassus, joint UCSF health partnerships, Satellite Clinics, or with UCSF Faculty at other off-site clinic sites, et al).

Responsibilities

Performs specialized audiological procedures (including threshold evaluation, speech audiometry, central auditory testing, immittance testing, otoacoustic emissions, videonystagmography, rotational chair assessment, and evoked potential audiometry) to evaluate and define hearing problems in adult and pediatric patients.

Counsels patients and/or patient’s family regarding audiometric findings and subsequent recommendations. Assists the patient and family in understanding the cost of audiological services and provides information regarding financial assistance when appropriate.

Provides comprehensive hearing aid services including evaluation, fitting, counseling, dispensing, electroacoustic and real ear analysis, orientation, and performs earmold impression modification, and minor repair of hearing aids.

Refers patients and family members to appropriate professional specialists, agencies or resources, mutually exchanging information when warranted.

Provides written reports as appropriate and maintains careful documentation of records of services provided to individuals.

Meets established clinic productivity standards.

Participates in the Quality Assurance program in Audiology.

Provides the clinic manager, hearing aid coordinator, and Director of Audiology with pertinent information regarding hearing aid dispensing related matters.

Functions in a professional and cooperative manner with clerical and other professional co-workers.

Demonstrates courtesy, common sense and follow-through in all telephone communications, maintaining the telephone standards as established by the Medical Center staff.

Upholds the House Standards adopted by the Medical Center staff to ensure a professional and helpful working environment.

Complies with all Medical Center policies and procedures for infection control, safety, administrative and clinical practice. Complies with activities mandated by JCAHO/Title 22.

Education/Professional Development

Participates in the teaching of audiologists, residents, interns, students and is responsible for broadening own knowledge of audiologic tests and procedures, and technological developments of hearing aids and assistive listening devices.

Attends staff meetings and participates in program development, research projects and the improvement of services, as instructed by the Director.

Attends national, state and/or local professional meetings; maintains knowledge of current professional literature and clinical techniques.

Keeps the Director informed of internal and external matters deemed pertinent to the development and maintenance of the audiology program.

Maintains appropriate licensure and continuing education requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

AuD or PhD in Audiology. For UCSF incumbents only, an equivalent combination of education (i.e., Master’s degree) and experience prior to implementation of AuD.

Preferred:

Current Dispensing Audiologist License.

License/Certification:

Current California Audiologist license or a Provisional Audiologist license and full licensure within three (3) months of hire.
