Job Overview The Senior Database Developer will serve as the technical lead for database architecture and development supporting the FMCSA TruData Modernization initiative. This role requires deep expertise in AWS native data services, ETL/ELT processes, and enterprise data warehouse solutions to ensure successful migration and modernization of FMCSA's critical safety data infrastructure. The Senior Database Developer will provide hands-on technical leadership in designing, implementing, and maintaining data solutions that support approximately 100 data marts and enable data-driven decision making for motor carrier safety operations nationwide.

This role will be a

full-time position

with work performed both

on-site at DOT Headquarters, 1200 New Jersey Ave SE, Washington, DC 20590

and remotely, with core hours Monday-Friday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM EST. Position is contingent upon award and upon client approval.

What You'll Do

AWS Cloud Data Architecture

Design, develop, and maintain data infrastructure using AWS native services including Redshift, Glue, S3, Lake Formation, Kinesis, and DynamoDB Lead technical implementation of data warehouse and data lake architectures supporting FMCSA mission systems Support architecture reviews using AWS Well-Architected Framework principles Implement real-time and batch data pipelines for continuous data ingestion and processing Data Migration & ETL/ELT Development

Develop and optimize ETL/ELT scripts for data migration from legacy MCMIS and other source systems Ensure data platform operates in parallel with legacy systems until complete sunset of deprecated infrastructure Maintain connectivity with identified data sources and manage data ingestion processes Support transition of data sources from legacy to modernized applications Data Mart Development & Management

Create and maintain state-specific data marts supporting SafeSpect, PRISM, and ITD program requirements Support approximately 100 data marts currently approaching full capacity Optimize data sharing between applications and standardize reference data across systems Develop reports and dashboards for data visualization and analytics using business intelligence tools Database Performance & Optimization

Perform database performance tuning, query optimization, and capacity planning Implement advanced SQL and stored procedure development Conduct data quality validation and implement validation frameworks Execute database administration and optimization for Amazon Redshift Production Support & Maintenance

Provide Tier III production support for delivered capabilities and critical issue resolution Respond to vulnerabilities remediation activities to assure identified issues are resolved in DOT mandated timelines Support and maintain current and future datasets to the Datahub Perform corrective, adaptive, perfective, and preventative maintenance activities Collaboration & Documentation

Collaborate with MC-I team to establish baseline documentation and mature technical specifications Ensure all database solutions comply with Section 508 accessibility requirements Develop and maintain technical documentation for data systems and processes What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Database Management, or related field Minimum of seven (7) years database development experience Minimum of three (3) years hands-on AWS data services experience Demonstrated experience with large-scale data migrations AWS Data Services Expertise

Amazon Redshift: Administration, optimization, and performance tuning AWS Glue: ETL job development and orchestration S3: Data lake design and implementation AWS Lake Formation: Governance and security implementation Kinesis: Real-time data streaming configuration and management DynamoDB: NoSQL database management and optimization Database Development Skills

Expert-level proficiency with SQL and Python programming Advanced stored procedure development and optimization Data modeling and schema design ETL/ELT pattern implementation and optimization Performance tuning and query optimization Data Integration & Architecture

Legacy system data migration strategies API development and integration Change data capture techniques Data pipeline orchestration Master data management Data warehouse architecture patterns Business intelligence and analytics Metadata management Data governance frameworks Security & Compliance

Knowledge of data security and encryption standards Understanding of NIST and FedRAMP security frameworks Experience with federal data compliance requirements

Preferred Qualifications

Federal agency experience with government data systems Transportation or motor carrier industry knowledge Master's degree in Data Science or related field AWS Database Specialty or Data Analytics certification Experience with MCMIS or similar compliance systems Snowflake or similar cloud data platform experience Apache Spark or similar big data processing frameworks

Performance Expectations

Success in this role means:

Successfully migrate and modernize legacy MCMIS data systems Maintain 99.9% uptime for critical data platforms Support approximately 100 data marts with optimal performance Ensure compliance with all federal security and accessibility requirements Deliver high-quality technical documentation and knowledge transfer

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain and maintain DOT/FMCSA security clearance PIV card eligibility for facility and system access Compliance with all FMCSA security protocols and requirements Must pass pre-employment suitability checks

Working Conditions

Location: Hybrid - DOT Headquarters and remote work capability Hours: Core hours Monday-Friday: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM EST Environment: Secure government facility and remote work environment Security: Access to sensitive PII and government data systems

Salary Range

$115,000 to $125,000
