Job Description

Southwest Virginia Community College is seeking a candidate for an adjunct, teaching faculty position for the Practical Nursing Program beginning in Fall Semester 2025. Teaching responsibilities may include classroom, clinical and campus laboratory instruction in practical nursing courses. Position requires clinical travel, student advising, active participation in nursing faculty, curriculum development and practical nursing faculty meetings, and other activities. Duties will be performed at the main campus or off-site clinical locations of the College as needs require.

The faculty member's role encompasses the general areas of learning facilitation, personal and professional development, and institutional and community service.

Primary responsibilities for this position are to:

Innovatively teach lecture/lab/clinical courses as assigned, employing current educational technology:

Teach college level courses in nursing content areas. Teaching load of 12 credits or less per semester which may include distance-learning courses and on-and-off campus courses during the day, an evening, on weekdays and weekends, as needed.

Establish and maintain a student focused classroom/lab teaching and learning environment conducive to student success;

Design and implement teaching methods and strategies which complement lecture with lab instruction;

Implement student recruitment initiatives;

Advise students in courses selection and requirements of the curriculum. Serve on department, division, and college committees;

Serve as a constructive and participative member of the Health Technologies Division and the larger college community that yields world-class collaborative learning and student outcomes;

Assist with maintaining SACSCOC accreditation and Board of Nursing standards for state approval.

Participate as a member of a teaching team, working collaboratively with other full- and part-time faculty to assess quality of instruction by reviewing and implementing innovative methodologies, techniques, and delivery methods when deemed appropriate: these may include collaborative learning, learning communities, service learning, instructional technology, distance and distributed learning, international education, and/or honors programs and nursing club organizations.

Demonstrate capacity to be future-focused and prepared to take this discipline forward into new areas of instruction and opportunity that may not currently be recognized or envisioned at this point in time.

Teach courses at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs.

Use innovative teaching strategies in the classroom.

Demonstrate skill and knowledge in the teaching discipline.

Evaluate students to measure their progress toward achievement of stated course objectives and inform them in a timely manner of their progress in the course.

Provide timely, quality access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, or other appropriate methods.

Serve as academic advisor to students in a proactive manner to assist in retention and program completion.

Develop and use syllabus and calendar for each course or laboratory within college and departmental guidelines.

Acquire skills for teaching online courses and other emerging teaching innovations and delivery methods.

Mentor adjunct faculty in the discipline.

Serve on college committees as required.

Submit required college reports and forms.

Maintain professional relationships with students, colleagues, and community members.

Participate in system/college/departmental professional development activities and attend meetings and/or committees created to facilitate professional growth and development.

Maintain active memberships in professional organizations recognized by and associated with the teaching discipline.

Demonstrate commitment to the philosophy of the community college, student success, and academic excellence.

Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrate knowledge of computer applications/software as aids in the teaching and learning process.

Demonstrate commitment to multi-cultural and multi-generational diversity.

Serve as a community resource person and represent the college to outside groups as requested.

Travel in and out of state for conferences and training is required.

Assume other duties as requested.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree preferably with a major in nursing or an associate degree in nursing and be actively enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program.

Must possess current RN licensure in VA or multistate licensure without any disciplinary action that currently restricts practice and have at least two years of direct client care experience as a registered nurse.

Must have a strong commitment to the Practical Nursing Program, community college and to teaching excellence.

Good communication skills and organizational ability.

Computer literacy and knowledge of learning management systems.

Additional Considerations

Clinical expertise and teaching experience at the Practical Nursing level.

Clinical nursing experience in medical, surgical, psychiatrics, obstetrics, pediatric, and geriatric nursing.

Evidence of continuous professional development in field.

Demonstrated flexibility in working with others and meeting the needs of a diverse student population.
