PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Responsible for developing and implementing the maintenance strategy for district vehicles and equipment; responsible for overseeing all aspects of the vehicle/equipment maintenance program including personnel, preventative maintenance, repairs, governmental compliance, vehicle/equipment replacement program, safety standards, training, communicating with vendors, minimizing downtime and using cost efficient means.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or equivalent
Bachelor's degree preferred
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver's license with passenger (P) and school bus (S) endorsement
Certified Texas vehicle safety inspector
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS: Advanced knowledge of automotive mechanics and maintenance Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently Ability to access, read, and interpret documents such as safety regulations, operating and maintenance inspection rules, procedure manuals and vehicle service manuals Ability to direct and supervise personnel Ability to pass US Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam Ability to complete required bus driver safety training Ability to access and use service materials Ability to operate bus Effective organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills CDE Brake Inspector certificate preferred ASE School Bus Master Certificate, preferred EXPERIENCE:
6 years experience in vehicle repair and maintenance procedures recommended 3 year supervisory experience recommended
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Process and prioritize vehicle repair work orders. Evaluate and recommend all repairs and calculate cost estimates. Arrange for outside repairs when work cannot be performed in Magnolia ISD shop. Assign work to vehicle mechanics, mechanic assistants, and mechanic helpers. Oversee completion of work and inspect completed work for quality. Establish preventive maintenance and care schedules. Perform major and minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision. Maintain accurate, up to date preventative maintenance records. Rebuild, replace, or repair vehicle parts such as engines, brakes, transmission lines, electrical assemblies, and accessories. Consult with other mechanics to help resolve repair problems and help train mechanics and mechanic assistants and mechanic helpers. Conduct Annual Assessments of school buses and district vehicles and recommend replacement as necessary. Prepare and/or review specifications for school buses, district vehicles and equipment to ensure compliance with current regulations. Oversee collision procedures and the Collision Review Committee. Verifying that recommendations of the Collision Review Committee are fulfilled. INSPECTION:
Perform state safety inspections for all district vehicles. SAFETY:
Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, and equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures. Ensure that shop, equipment, and tools are kept in safe operating condition. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to the director. OTHER:
Conduct annual inventory of equipment and supplies. Recommend replacement of equipment when needed. Assist in compiling department budget. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required, including, but not limited to: HGAC and TIER 2 reports Operate bus and vehicles as needed which includes, but is not limited to driving routes when needed. Other duties as assigned
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct the work of shop foreman, lead mechanics, mechanics, mechanic assistant(s) and mechanic helper(s).
Mental, Physical Demands:
Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles.
Posture: Frequent standing; frequent kneeling/ squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
Motion: Frequent walking; frequent climbing, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension/ and overhead reaching; frequent driving.
Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Frequent intra-district travel; occasional prolonged and irregular work hours; heavy lifting and movement of equipment in excess of 30 pounds;
