Position Summary
This position may be located within a Hospital Facility, Patient Service Center (PSC), In Office Phlebotomy (IOP) or Mobile Diagnostic Services (MDS). It may be responsible for providing coverage at multiple locations. The role includes the collection and receipt of biological specimens into the department, proper entry into the company’s computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing and/or distribution of specimens to the appropriate analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre- and post-analytical testing. The position may also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. Follows the guidelines of the Code of Conduct.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards.
Core Functions
- Specimen collection; general laboratory specimen processing or referral laboratory processing, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques for all age criteria. In IOP locations, manage client relationships within Compliance regulations to meet client needs and Sonora Quest’s business objectives.
- Enter and verify patient demographics, location, physician data, tests requested, time and date of collection, relevant clinical information, and other data on requisitions and orders for processing and billing. Verify accuracy of entered information and appropriateness of specimens. Aliquot and label specimens; deliver to the technical area or perform initial processing for transport. May assist in monitoring workflow and training new employees.
- Focus on quality; ensure work is accurate and complete. Complete documents legibly and accurately per site protocol. Maintain familiarity with procedures. Record communications and initiate computer-generated reports for patient reporting and quality assurance. Meet departmental standards for productivity and quality. Participate in department/system processes and Six Sigma initiatives. Maintain acceptable specimen rejection rates.
- Participate in departmental financial responsibilities through appropriate use of supplies and materials; reduce waste; contribute to initiatives to lower costs and improve service. Basic knowledge of billing. Commitment to an error-free work environment.
- Communicate courteously and professionally with internal and external customers; work with colleagues as a team and support excellent customer service. Be able to work across areas/departments/shifts as assigned. Resolve basic service issues; attend meetings and stay current with communications (email, newsletters, etc.).
- Acknowledge and understand the importance of patient rights and privacy (HIPAA).
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum age requirement of 18.
- High School diploma or equivalent may be required depending on state regulatory requirements.
- Basic knowledge of department resource materials.
- Completion of a phlebotomy program or phlebotomy experience.
- Position may require DHS Fingerprinting Certification or the ability to obtain fingerprint certification.
- Depending on department/location, candidate must possess a valid state driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.
- Float positions require travel and flexible hours to work multiple locations; may be required to cover mobile phlebotomy facilities/in-office locations with minimal notice. Must be flexible and available for weekends, holidays and overtime. May be required to work occasional on-call duties.
- Progression through career ladder II-IV is subject to completion of career ladder requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual (Spanish/English).
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Additional related education and/or experience.
