Overview
Product Hardware Design Manager - Displays at General Motors. Role involves leading the display hardware design, validation, and release throughout the product lifecycle; managing a hardware engineering team; and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver quality display modules for GM vehicles.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for overseeing and guiding a team of electrical hardware designers, providing technical direction, assigning tasks, and ensuring productivity and efficiency.
- Mentor and coach hardware engineers and support career growth.
- Work with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical hardware designs into the product.
- Lead embedded designs for advanced module architectures.
- Lead new IC design/development strategies for advanced in-vehicle architectures.
- Lead electrical schematic design and PCB layout.
- Assess feasibility of electrical hardware designs considering cost, performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
- Support next-generation designs for current and future display panel technologies (e.g., LCD, OLED) in GM vehicles.
- Perform or review electrical worst-case analyses.
- Represent GM hardware team as design expert in core technologies and lead design reviews.
- Lead testing strategies, end-of-line production tests, and field issue resolution.
- Coordinate build-to-print processes and liaise with contract manufacturers.
- Apply cost-effective design improvements and lead product development across multiple engineering hubs (Detroit and West Coast).
- Refine requirements with MPG team and maintain display hardware design deliverables (block diagrams, schematics, PCB layout, etc.).
- Lead peer reviews and identify integration, interface, and systemic issues.
- Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) for Displays and assist with vehicle assembly plant issue resolution.
- Provide technical leadership for troubleshooting to support issue resolution (PRTS), product investigations (SFI), and cost reduction efforts.
- Offer guidance to Design Release Engineers (DREs) and develop/maintain best practices.
- Collaborate across Displays, Electric Power subsystem teams, and Safety; ensure program imperatives (cost, mass, content, IPTV) are met.
- Work with DRE/Validation groups to plan component validation and ensure timely execution.
- Participate in formal design reviews, peer reviews, and quality valve reviews as required by the Vehicle Development Process (VDP).
- Develop, review, and approve electrical in-process test plans and support vehicle integration for pre-production/production.
- Lead or participate in issue resolution for design and development issues, ECU warranty analysis, parts restrictions, and reporting to leadership.
- Lead or support DFMEA/PFMEA of Displays.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Professional experience creating digital/analog HW interfaces including schematic creation and/or PCB layout and supportive documentation.
- Minimum 10+ years in automotive hardware electronics design.
- Experience with display technologies, SERDES, TCONs, TDDIs and other key design components and future semiconductor roadmaps.
- In-depth knowledge of requirements engineering (FMEA, Preliminary Hazard Analyses) and verification/validation processes.
- In-depth knowledge of embedded software development, testing, and tools.
- Understanding of hardware design and failure modes; knowledge of mechanical/electrical mechanisms; experience with design development, testing, manufacturing, and assembly processes.
- Strong oral and written communication; ability to work cross-functionally within Electrical and other teams.
- Demonstrated problem-solving ability and interpersonal skills; able to motivate teams and manage complex problems.
- High-level analytical problem-solving skills for unusual and challenging problems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with design/analysis tools like Mentor Graphics, MathCad, PSpice, and Saber.
- Previous industry experience with display technologies.

Compensation and Benefits
The compensation information is a good faith estimate and varies by location. Base compensation range: $168,000 - $258,800, with potential bonuses based on company and individual performance. Benefits include GM health and wellbeing programs, retirement savings, paid time off, and other GM total rewards offerings.
