Summary

Night crew: 3:00pm to 11:30pm. The Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and burnish floors, vacuums and shampoos carpets, cleans and dusts surfaces, cleans and sanitizes restrooms, disposes of waste daily, and maintains custodial closets.
  • Performs minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, toilet seats, unclogging toilets, changing ceiling tiles, touching up paint, securing windows, delivering supplies, setting up for facility activities/meetings, and assembling/moving furniture.
  • Follows lawn and facility maintenance programs (mowing, weeding, weed-eating, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, cleaning sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, graffiti removal).
  • Opens or closes and secures facilities, including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems. Turns on/off lights and ensures grounds and facilities are free of debris and hazards. Responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
  • Works independently or as part of a custodial crew, demonstrates tact and cooperation, maintains a positive attitude, supports co-workers, and helps resolve conflicts.
  • Assumes modified duties and responsibilities of Head Custodian or Custodial Crew Leader in the event of absence or vacancy.
  • Possesses basic English language skills.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.

  • Attendance & Punctuality: Schedule time off in advance, begin work on time, and keep absences within guidelines. Ensure responsibilities are covered when absent. Arrive at meetings and appointments on time.

Experience & Certifications

  • Experience: One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in large-scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: New and current employees are encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.

Skills

  • Language: Reads and comprehends simple instructions and short correspondence; writes simple correspondence; basic working English.
  • Mathematical: Add/subtract two-digit numbers; multiply/divide with tens and hundreds; understand units of money, weight, volume, and distance.
  • Reasoning: Apply common sense to carry out simple instructions; handle standardized situations with limited variables.
  • Computer: Use internal HCPS email system and district website as appropriate.

Physical Demands

  • Physical Activities: Standing, walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, handling, keyboarding, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, near/far/color vision, depth perception.
  • Lifting: Up to 55 pounds; over 55 pounds requires a 2-person lift.
  • Reaching: With both hands; overhead.
  • Environmental Conditions: Noise level moderate; exposure to extreme temperatures, cleaning chemicals, vibration, heavy equipment, moving parts, electrical hazards, fumes or airborne particles.
