Overview

Reporting to the custodial coordinator, custodians perform regular tasks as assigned to ensure that Kalamazoo College is a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. Full-time custodians have the opportunity to work in various types of buildings on campus, including academic, offices, and residence halls.

Responsibilities

• Clean, polish, and sanitize surfaces as appropriate including in classrooms, offices, shared spaces, restrooms, residence halls, and work carts.
• Clean floors, to include sweeping, dusting, damp/wet mopping, stripping, waxing and buffing as scheduled.
• Clean carpets, to include vacuuming, shampooing, and extracting as scheduled.
• Clean walls and ceilings by washing, wiping, dusting, spot cleaning, etc.
• Discard waste/trash into proper containers and prepare trash receptacles for additional use.
• Ensure work/assignment areas are clean and equipment is properly stored at all times.
• Set up tables, chairs, and meeting rooms as directed.
• Read and follow labels and SDS sheets on all cleaning supplies before use.
• Report any damage to facilities through the work order system.
• Maintain an adequate supply of housekeeping supplies in utility/janitorial closets and keep supervisor informed of supply needs.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; demonstrated skills, abilities, and characteristics as described by the department.
• Flexibility and dependability; ability and willingness to work assigned schedule, including occasional weekends or evening hours as assigned.
• Ability to read, write and understand written labels and directions.
• Ability to follow work directions and safety rules, including use of personal protective equipment.
• Ability to work independently and cooperatively as part of a team; maintain a neat appearance.
• Physical ability to move within and between campus buildings and to perform very active work for eight-hour shifts; ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop and climb; lift and carry cleaning equipment, tools and supplies; primarily indoor work with some outdoor exposure in inclement weather.

Schedule, pay, and benefits

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 5am or 7am depending on the assigned building and current need. Each shift includes two 15-minute paid breaks and one 30-minute unpaid meal break. Starting rate: $16.00/hr, paid bi-weekly. This is a benefits-eligible position that includes pay-based health insurance premiums.
