Essential Job Description

The Custodian III performs highly complex (senior-level) custodial work, including cleaning and sanitizing state hospital buildings and treatment units, and providing housekeeping services in a clinical setting. This role also involves inspecting buildings and equipment, ordering and restocking supplies, and providing backup to other custodians. The position works under limited supervision with latitude for initiative and independent judgment. Other duties as assigned include support for disaster response/COOP activation and possible alternate shift patterns.

This position may be eligible for additional pay for evenings, nights, weekends, or work at maximum security locations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform, coordinate, clean, and sanitize state hospital buildings and treatment units
  • Provide housekeeping services in a clinical setting and conduct inspections of buildings and equipment
  • Order and restock supplies and equipment; back up other custodians as needed
  • Work under limited supervision with substantial latitude for initiative
  • Participate in disaster response and Continuity of Operations (COOP) when required
  • May work alternate shifts or locations as needed

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

  • Attend work regularly and may be assigned specific or rotating shift schedules, including overtime per agency policy
  • Maintain cleaning supplies, chemicals, and equipment; keep records of usage and maintenance; perform minor repairs as needed
  • Clean, dust, disinfect restrooms and surfaces across offices, treatment areas, and patient rooms; manage waste disposal
  • Ensure patient units meet cleanliness, health, safety, and infection control standards; identify and follow up on problem areas
  • Assist Custodian Manager with hospital safety and infection control programs

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of cleaning techniques, dusting, sweeping, mopping; floor stripping and waxing
  • Knowledge of cleaning and disinfecting restrooms and showers
  • Knowledge of inventory control principles
  • Skills in handling custodial materials and equipment; operation of custodial tools
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods
  • Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers and patients; willingness to work irregular hours

Qualifications

  • Initial Screening Criteria: One year of custodial/housekeeping experience in a hospital, nursing home, residential facility, hotel, or similar setting OR eighteen (18) months of proven work experience
  • Registrations, Licensure, or Certifications: None
