Overview
The Office of Custodial Services under the Department of Facility Services within the Frederick County Division of Parks & Recreation is committed to providing the highest level of facility management to maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary environment for all stakeholders in Frederick County Government facilities (Park and NON-Park sites). In-House Custodial staff are required to pass extensive background checks to be approved to work in high-security facilities.
Position Details
Non-exempt (eligible for compensatory and/or overtime); full-time; 40 hours per week; full benefits. Evening Shift: Monday–Friday, 4:00 p.m.–12:30 a.m. (shift differential eligible).
This position is responsible for routine cleaning duties in Frederick County parks and facilities as assigned, following established protocol. The Custodian must take appropriate precautionary measures to ensure environmental and sanitation safety of employees and visitors in the assigned buildings. The Custodian must be able to work independently. Supervision is provided by the Lead Custodian, Custodial Services Supervisor, and/or the Facility Services Manager.

Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, scrub, strip and polish floors
- Clean and maintain carpeted areas
- Wash walls, windows, stairways, and woodwork (may require ladder work)
- Dust and polish furniture and equipment
- Move and arrange furniture and equipment
- Clean, sanitize, and deodorize restrooms; restock supplies
- Empty wastebaskets and remove trash inside and around the building
- Empty containers for recycling and transport recyclables to designated areas
- Operate a large van to transport supplies between County facilities as needed
- Report damage and hazards to the Lead Custodian, Building Manager, or Facility Services Manager
- Performs custodial duties outside assign buildings as needed
- Close and secure doors, turn off lights, and conserve energy as appropriate
- Attend team meetings as required
- Perform other related duties as required
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school graduation or equivalent
- Possession of valid automobile operator's license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to maintain County Authorized Driver privileges
- Knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning agents, sanitizing chemicals, and protective gear; ability to use safely
- Knowledge of (or ability to learn) operation of buffers, vacuum cleaners, carpet extractors, and related equipment
- Ability to understand and follow written and spoken English instructions
- Ability to organize work, set priorities, and complete duties with minimal supervision
- Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, professional working relationships with coworkers and the public
Preference
- Previous custodial/janitorial work experience
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Constant walking, lifting up to 20 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 40 pounds; frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching; lifting 20–50 pounds; occasional lifting over 50 pounds
- Indoor work in dusty environments with chemicals; potential exposure to infectious diseases; required to wear protective equipment
- Frequently working in dirty areas; occasionally outdoors in temperatures above 100 degrees or below 32 degrees; rarely working at heights
- Ability to provide own transportation when needed
- Weekend and holiday work availability; minimum of three mandatory Parks and Recreation events
- Ability and availability to work irregular hours as needed
