Overview
The Custodian I performs semi-skilled custodial services for University facilities following established procedures and guidelines in the maintenance of buildings, classrooms, offices, lavatories and restrooms, and associated areas, their furnishings and equipment using manual tools and electrically-powered machines. The Custodian I also moves furniture and equipment for cleaning or for special events which may require carrying and erecting tables, chairs, stages, podiums, sound shells, and similar items indoors and outdoors. The work includes the removal of snow and/or ice from exterior entrances, walkways and sidewalks.

Responsibilities
- Performs regular, scheduled, and directed floor and stairs maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered floor machines to sweep, vacuum, and mop floors and stairs, and strip and wax floors according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
- Performs regular, scheduled, and directed carpet and upholstery maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered carpet extractors, shampooers, vacuums, back pack vacuums, and using upholstery tools according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
- Cleans building furnishings within assigned area by dusting, washing, and/or polishing office furniture and equipment.
- Ensures lavatories, restrooms, showers, and locker rooms are clean and sanitary by following prescribed procedures and restocking paper products, soap, and liners; removing trash and waste.
- Cleans classroom or meeting room furniture and equipment by dusting, washing, and/or re-aligning desks and chairs; damp-mopping or vacuuming floors; removing trash.
- Cleans interior walls and removes adhesive materials; washes walls as needed to remove stains.
- Washes interior and exterior glass, including windows and mirrors, using appropriate cleaners and equipment.
- Removes trash from assigned areas and transports to dumpsters; empties trash into dumpsters.
- Removes recyclable materials from assigned areas and transports to recycling dumpsters, ensuring dumpsters are locked after dumping.
- Uses cleaning chemicals safely by wearing protective clothing, following directions for mixing and disposal, and labeling stored chemicals.
- Unloads deliveries and fetches cleaning supplies, transporting them to storage facilities as needed.
- Prepares rooms and outdoor areas for special events by moving furniture and setting up equipment per set-up plans or instructions.
- Assists in preventing accidents from snow or ice by shoveling, sweeping, and applying salt or sand as directed.
- Responds to emergencies (e.g., leaks, injuries) following prescribed procedures.
- Performs building security and safety checks and reports hazards to the supervisor.
- Reports damage or emergency conditions to supervisor or Safety Office as appropriate.
- May perform additional duties such as light bulb replacement, basic repairs, cleaning in living areas, or flood remediation as assigned.
- May clean outdoor entryways, loading docks, or areas around dumpsters using hand tools and power equipment as assigned.
- Performs routine maintenance of custodial equipment and proper storage of supplies.
- May provide information on campus building locations and advise of unsafe conditions.
- Contributes to department success by performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education: Completion of the 10th grade is required. Significant custodial experience may substitute for formal education. A high school diploma or the equivalent is preferred.
Experience: At least one year of experience in custodial services, including knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies, is required.
Skills: Ability to read English sufficiently to understand work orders and instructions, and to follow directions for cleaners, chemicals, and equipment.
Effort: Ability to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment up to 75 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally; prolonged walking or standing; frequent bending, stooping, and reaching; ability to operate manual and powered cleaning equipment; ability to access areas that require ladders or stairs.
Some positions may be designated as essential employees and must report to work when University offices are closed due to severe weather.
Other: Some positions may be located in facilities designated “sensitive” and may involve export control considerations. Exposure to cleaning chemicals is possible and proper handling is required.
