We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced CWI/Welding Inspector to support a specialized fabrication project involving the welding of armor plate to MIL-STD-3040A requirements at Taylor Defense Products. Taylor Defense serves as both a Prime Contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense and as a subcontractor to Defense Primes and other commercial customers. Our core business includes new production of construction and material handling equipment, SLEP and Modernization of construction and material handling equipment, and fabrication and assembly of metal products including armor plate, crew protection kits, and tactical vehicles. Taylor Defense is certified 9001:2015 and looking to continuously improve all our systems to achieve the highest quality level possible. The ideal candidate will come from a fabrication background, preferably in defense or aerospace and have expertise in welding and NDT inspection processes. This role demands strong attention to detail, and the ability to mentor and coach welders in proper welding execution in a build-to-print environment. The CWI will play a critical role in ensuring compliance with military standards, verifying weld quality, and supporting process control for complex welded assemblies. A background as a Welding Engineer is preferred, though not required, for candidates with strong inspection and technical expertise.
Responsibilities
- Perform welding inspections in accordance with AWS QC1, AWS D1.1, MIL-STD-3040A, and project-specific requirements.
- Review and interpret welding procedures (WPS), procedure qualification records (PQR), and welder performance qualifications (WPQ).
- Conduct visual inspections, dimensional checks, and NDT coordination (VT, MT, PT, RT, UT as applicable).
- Verify material traceability, weld joint preparation, and compliance with armor plate specifications (e.g., MIL-DTL-46100 / MIL-DTL-46186).
- Ensure all inspection results are documented, traceable, and conform to ISO 9001:2015 / customer requirements.
- Work closely with welders, welding engineers, and production teams to drive continuous improvement and defect prevention.
- Support root cause analysis and corrective actions for nonconforming welds or materials.
- Participate in audits, customer inspections, and quality reviews.
- Provide training and mentorship to shop-floor personnel on weld quality and compliance requirements.
- Provide leadership and training to quality teams, ensuring knowledge transfer of best practices, regulatory compliance, and defense industry requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
- Demonstrated experience inspecting welded assemblies to military or defense fabrication standards.
- Strong knowledge of welding symbols, joint design, GD&T, and blueprint interpretation.
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-3040A or other DoD welding/fabrication standards.
- Experience with NDT processes and working knowledge of applicable codes (AWS D1.1, D1.2, D1.5, D1.6, etc.).
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and quality reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Prior role as a Welding Engineer or equivalent technical function.
- Level I MT.
- Experience with programming robotic welders.
Job Requirements
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment around heavy equipment and welding operations.
- May require lifting up to 50 lbs., standing/walking for extended periods, and use of PPE.
- Occasional travel to suppliers, customer sites, or test labs.
