Overview

Fitness Attendant at City of Muskogee. Assists members and guests of the Muskogee Swim & Fitness Center with proper use of equipment and other related duties that may be assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Assists recreation personnel in the scheduling, supervision and upkeep of recreation facilities and equipment, including the opening or closing of the facility.
  • Operates telephone to answer, screen and forward calls and provide information as necessary and required.
  • Monitors the fitness center to ensure a safe exercise atmosphere and provides instruction to patrons in the proper use of all facility equipment.
  • Receives phone calls and visitors and arranges meetings, appointments and schedules.
  • Enrolls and renews facility memberships and special programs and class participation using knowledge of facility programs, membership information and sales operations.
  • Handles customer needs, front desk point of sale and membership data entry.
  • Interprets recreation programs and department procedures to groups and individuals.
  • Cleans and maintains fitness and weight room equipment; performs light cleaning of office and surrounding areas.
  • Operates office equipment and uses computers for spreadsheet, word processing, database management, and other applications; learns to operate new office technologies as they are developed and implemented.
  • Sweeps and mops tile and rubber floors; launders cleaning towels used to wipe down equipment.
  • Reports equipment maintenance needs and assists in assembling and disassembling recreational equipment.
  • Conducts tours of the facility.
  • Receives, reports, and deposits daily receipts.
  • Performs other work as necessary and/or as assigned.
  • Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

Qualifications

Training and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of related experience. Preference given to those with college-level training in Recreation, Health Promotion, Sports Management or other fitness-related areas.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Working knowledge of fitness systems and proper techniques used in a recreation/fitness facility. Knowledge of facility membership software (to be learned during employment). Ability to deal with customers and the public, enforce operating policies in a courteous manner, establish and maintain working relationships with coworkers and patrons, repair non-working fitness equipment, and keep simple records.

Physical Requirements: Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands and fingers; reach with arms and hands. Occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch. Occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Vision, hearing and speech abilities adequate to perform essential tasks. Punctuality and attendance are essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness-to-work exam.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D driver’s license is required. Requires CPR, AED and First Aid Certification.

Working Environment: Indoors in a fitness/aquatic facility. Exposed to hot, wet, and humid conditions. Noise level usually loud. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Notice: This classification is a safety-sensitive position as defined by applicable regulations and is subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana may be included in the drug panel.

Relationships

Reporting Relationships: The Fitness Attendant reports directly to the Fitness Coordinator. No direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.
