The Office. The Montgomery County Government Office of the County Attorney is among the premier local government legal offices in the United States. Representing one of the nation’s largest local governments, with an annual budget that presently exceeds $7 billion, attorneys in Office of the County Attorney are called upon to handle a wide variety of matters, many of which involve exciting and novel areas of the law. The Office provides legal advice and representation to all County departments, agencies, instrumentalities, boards and commissions, including the County Council, and all their employees. The Office also provides legal defense for cases involving Montgomery County and other governmental entities which participate in the Montgomery County Self-Insurance Program (including the Board of Education for Montgomery County, Montgomery College, and the Housing Opportunities Commission) and all their employees.
The Division. Attorneys in the Litigation Division provide legal defense for cases involving Montgomery County and other governmental entities that participate in the Montgomery County Self-Insurance Program (including the Board of Education for Montgomery County, Montgomery College , and the Housing Opportunities Commission) and their employees. The attorneys appear regularly before state and federal courts in Maryland for trials and oral arguments and occasionally appear in the District of Columbia. L itigation includes the following areas:
Common law torts
Police civil rights claims
Federal and state constitutional torts
Americans with Disabilities Act
Vocational Rehabilitation Act
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
Employment discrimination

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Offi ce of the County Attorney is currently recruiting for an experienced full-time attorney to lead its Litigation Division of approximately 10 attorneys and paralegals. The ideal candidate will possess :
Ability to manage and mentor a team of 10 attorneys and paralegals
A bility to successfully handle a diverse caseload independently and efficiently
Exceptional research, analytical, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment while also demonstrating initiative and self-motivation
Superior written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex legal concepts clearly and persuasively

The primary responsibilities of the position are:
Overseeing the work of the division and supervising attorneys, paralegals, and other staff
providing legal advice on liability matters to the Director of Finance and the Chief of the Risk Management Division, as well as other County departments and other local government entities participating in the Self-Insurance Program
representing the County and other Self-Insurance Program participants and their employees before state and federal courts
Education - Graduation from an accredited university school of law.
Experience: Seven years of progressively responsible professional experience as an attorney, three of which were in a supervisory or executive capacity.
License - Membership in the Maryland State Bar. Note: There will be no substitutions for this section.

Preference for interviews will be given to applicants with experience in the following:
Experience successfully supervising and mentoring a team of attorneys and other para-professional staff
Experience in the areas of law handled by the Division , particularly civil defense trial work with an emphasis on government practice
