Overview
Denver Botanic Gardens is seeking a Full Time Safety & Security Guard in the Operations Department. The Gardens is a dynamic, 24-acre urban oasis in the heart of Denver, renowned for its living plant collections, natural history and art collections, and ongoing exhibitions. The Safety & Security Guard maintains a safe and secure environment for customers and employees by patrolling and monitoring premises and personnel, including CCTV observation and periodic patrols to inspect protection devices and fire control equipment.
Responsibilities
- Provide superior customer service to Gardens employees, visitors, and volunteers.
- Patrol premises regularly to maintain order and establish presence.
- Monitor and authorize entrance of vehicles or people on the property.
- Secure all exits, doors, and windows after operations.
- Check surveillance cameras to identify disruptions or unlawful acts.
- Investigate suspicious activity or possessions; respond to alarms and assess situations.
- Provide assistance to people in need; submit daily surveillance reports.
- Ensure operation of security equipment by performing preventive maintenance (e.g., fire extinguishers, AEDs, alarms, lighting, doors, leaks) and report damages or needed repairs.
- Ensure compliance with Gardens policies for personnel, visitors, contractors, and members.
- Utilize radios and emergency notification services professionally and efficiently.
- Maintain premises and personnel safety by high visibility, patrolling, surveillance monitoring, and inspecting buildings and access points.
- Prevent losses by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policies and procedures.
- Communicate openly, honestly, and responsively; provide information about the facility and surrounding area as requested by visitors.
- Respond to emergencies using proper training and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Perform foot patrols and inspect grounds for unsafe conditions, unlocked doors, blocked ingress/egress, mechanical issues, and trespassers.
- Contribute to process and technique improvements; support team goals and service to members and visitors.
- Present a positive image of Denver Botanic Gardens; maintain a positive, helpful, and solution-oriented demeanor.
- Regular attendance at the worksite; remote work eligibility is at management discretion.
- Commit to the Gardens’ mission of connecting people with plants, including plants from the Rocky Mountain region and similar regions.
Position Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures and first aid; CPR certification or ability to obtain.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to write simple correspondence.
- Ability to present information effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
- Ability to handle problems with a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills with the public.
- Ability to stay stable under pressure and manage stressful situations; flexible and adaptable to changing plans.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams); ability to work overtime as necessary.
- Must be a positive representative of the Gardens and work respectfully with colleagues and the public.
- Commitment to working safely at all times.
Experience/Education
- High school diploma / GED or equivalent education/experience required.
- Minimum of 2 years of related experience and/or training in security or a related field preferred.
- CPR and First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within 1 month of employment.
- Position requires a valid driver’s license.
Travel
Up to 10% travel required. Ability to travel to remote locations or other Garden locations where environment may vary.
