Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) drive our business within HDR's matrix management structure. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients owning and operating highways, toll roads, and bridges, with services such as design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling.

This role requires understanding of H&R clients, funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures. The responsibilities are divided into:

  • Market leadership and business development (~70%)
  • Staff development (20%)
  • Support to Operations (10%)

The Director sets strategic vision, supports growth initiatives, develops staff, and coordinates with various leadership to implement plans. The role involves engaging with US and international clients, expanding HDR's presence, and leading business development and client management efforts, including participation in industry associations and strategic partnerships.

Responsibilities include overseeing market strategy, client relationships, project leadership, marketing, staff recruitment and development, operational support, and performance monitoring.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years in highway or bridge planning/engineering
  • Professional engineering license or equivalent
  • Leadership in industry associations like AASHTO, IBTTA

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's in Engineering or related field
  • At least 12 years of industry experience with leadership roles
  • Strong communication, client management, and business skills
