Highway & Roads Market Sector Director

Primary Responsibilities

Market Sector Directors (MSD) are part of HDR's matrix management structure that drive our business. The HDR Highway & Roads (H&R) sector is the largest market sector, representing nearly $1B in annual revenue globally. It includes clients that own and operate highways, toll roads, city, town, and local roads, and bridge structures.

The primary professional services in this sector include: bridge and highway design, traffic engineering, transportation planning, and tolling services. An understanding of H&R clients, their funding, revenue streams, and governmental structures is essential.

The responsibilities are divided into three areas:

  • Market leadership and business development (approximately 70%)
  • Staff development (20%)
  • Support to Operations (10%)

The Director will set the vision for HDR’s strategy to expand and provide services, support growth initiatives, develop staff, and coordinate strategies with leadership and clients. They will also support business development, client management, and market growth outside the US, including in Canada, the UK, the Middle East, and Australia.

Business Development

The Director will oversee market share growth, client relationships, and strategic pursuits, working with local and regional teams. Responsibilities include creating strategic vision, serving as a client manager, engaging in projects, promoting HDR services, and representing HDR in industry associations.

Staff Development

Lead an organization supporting staff growth, recruitment, and technical excellence. Participate in performance reviews and ensure the team is well-supported.

Support to Operations

Assist in project delivery, monitor performance indicators, support work sharing, and promote quality assurance and technical lessons learned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 20 years in highway/bridge planning or engineering
  • Professional engineering license or equivalent
  • Leadership roles in highway/road associations (AASHTO, IBTTA, etc.)
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field
  • At least 12 years of industry experience including leadership
  • Excellent communication, client management, and business skills
