Program Director - Rural Family Medicine Residency Program - F67850
As a founding core faculty member and the Program Director, you will help build this program from the ground up. We anticipate having residents in post no later than July 1, 2023. Prior to that time, the Program Director will work with the Associate Program Director to design curriculum, prepare and execute the ACGME application, help conduct initial recruiting for clinical faculty and residents, while maintaining time for independent clinical practice and scholarship. Once residents arrive, faculty will spend a majority of time on clinical precepting, direct resident and medical student education in both inpatient and outpatient settings, and educational administration, with remaining time devoted to personal clinical practice. This position will be primarily based at VCU's Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA; the Associate Program Director is primarily on the MCV Campus of VCU Health in Richmond, VA.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Demonstrates dedication to Family Medicine
Responsible for monitoring the faculty appointments, assignments, outcomes, and proper conduct of educational activities
Responsible for the supervision, direction, evaluation, and administration of the Family Medicine Education Program.
Responsibilities for the Family Medicine Program include:
Provide direction and leadership necessary to obtain and/or maintain the Family Medicine Residency Program with Full Residency Review Committee
Conduct ongoing review of the residency program as required by RRC and participate with the Department Chair and other Residency Leadership in recruiting and making recommendations for improvement in the educational programs within the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health and within the entire VCU Health systems.
Assure that services are performed in accordance with and sufficient for compliance with the requirements of all required accrediting bodies such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the System's liability
Continual improvement of the Family Medicine Residency Program with a full accreditation by the ACGME
Serve as a member of VCU Health's Graduate Medical Education Council.
Perform such duties as are appropriate and necessary to the position and operation of the VCU Health Systems and the Family Medicine Residency
Recruit, retain, and promote high caliber, diverse residents who exhibit interest and commitment to rural healthcare, health equity, excellence in patient care and medical education, high ethics, and a commitment to a high order of professionalism
Participate in the budgeting process for the residency
Review clinical teaching and scholarship of each faculty member individually and provide feedback
Education and Teaching Uphold the VCU Health Mission as a teaching institution and support projects relating to that goal. Be a model teacher for faculty, residents, student learners, interdisciplinary teams, and staff that supports a culture of inquiry and inspires high quality, evidence-based healthcare for all.
Professional Growth and Development
Participate in activities which will enhance role development:
Maintain clinical competency in Family Medicine
Serve on various medical staff committees
Enhance scholarship among faculty, residents, and students
Participate in activities which demonstrate professional commitment to the position and to VCU Health Systems:

General Goals
The Physician shall provide best efforts to:
Lead the development and ongoing improvement of the Rural Family Medicine Residency to be a leading residency program
Lead by example and conduct themselves in accordance with the highest standards of professional conduct
Provide a written Residency Development Plan annually to the Department. The plan shall address strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, needs, and anticipated actions to improve patient care, graduate and continuing medical education, scholarship, budgeting, and new sources of growth.

Required Qualifications
Able to obtain license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Shall have completed an accredited residency program in Family Medicine
Shall be certified and recertified by the American Board of Family Medicine
Five or more years of Family Medicine experience
Three to five years of experience as faculty in a Family Medicine Residency Training program
Past experience in providing direct patient care to underserved populations across multiple settings
Willing and able to care for patients in both the inpatient and outpatient setting
Commitment to diversity and inclusion
Desired Qualifications
Past experience in providing direct patient care and/or residency training in rural settings
Past experience in residency program development and improvement
Direct experience in the medical education of a diversity of learners such as medical students and interprofessional learners
Confidence and willingness to be a faculty lead in one or more of the following areas:
Care of pregnant women including antenatal, labor and delivery, and postpartum care
Care of children in the inpatient setting
Substance abuse treatment to include medically-assisted therapy
Primary care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and/or specialized procedural training in emergency, inpatient and outpatient settings
Recent scholarly activity such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of clinical series or case reports at scientific society meetings, or participation in national committees or educational organizations
The Department of Family Medicine and Population Health at VCU was founded in 1970. It has a long and proud history of training medical students and resident physicians. The department houses all family medicine medical student education programs, including a highly rated clerkship and two longitudinal, four-year track programs: The Inner City International Rural Program (I2CRP) is a 4-year longitudinal program for medical students committed to serving medically underserved populations. The program enrolls up to 24 students per cohort. The clinical curriculum includes preceptorships in urban and rural underserved settings and clerkship rotations in Family Medicine, general Pediatrics, Ambulatory Medicine, and general Surgery. The program also includes a scholarly capstone project relevant to underserved communities. We also have four affiliated family medicine residency programs at various locations around Virginia.
The Residency VCU's Department of Family Medicine and Population Health is creating a new rural training track family medicine residency focused on serving underserved populations in urban Richmond, rural South Hill, VA, and internationally. The residency will base first-year residents at VCU's flagship academic medical center in Richmond, then second- and third-year residents at VCU's Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA. The program aims to train physicians to address health disparities and inequities while delivering high-quality clinical care. The first class of residents is planned for post no later than July 1, 2023.
