Position: 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Work involves skilled clerical and public contact duties, receiving and processing routine and emergency telephone calls in the Communications Unit. The role requires efficient and accurate receiving and processing of calls for protection services, including routine information requests and emergency actions. All work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and is monitored by a supervisor in the Communications Unit.
This position is distinguished from others in the clerical series by extensive telephone contact work under stressful, emergency situations. Responsibilities include operating a police or fire/medical Emergency 911 system, entering calls into a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system, and providing routine information to the public upon request.
Responsibilities
Assist Emergency Dispatchers with dispatching personnel and equipment for emergency service using radio or computerized communications equipment. As a secondary operator, advise the public on emergency procedures, determine if a dispatch is necessary, and provide referral information on other agencies. Operate various office equipment (e.g., typewriter/teletype). Request ambulance and wrecker services by telephone when needed. Maintain records and files. Perform other related work as required.
Note: This position requires shift work including weekends and holidays, and may be assigned to any shift for an indefinite period. Beginning 911 Operators are likely to be assigned to the midnight or afternoon shift after training.
Qualifications and Special Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent required. The 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator certification must be obtained within twelve months from date of hire and maintained valid throughout employment. Fluency in English is required; fluency in Creole and/or Spanish is highly desirable. All candidates must demonstrate clear, well-modulated English speech.
Examinations and Preparation
Candidates meeting minimum requirements will complete a written examination as part of the selection process. The examination components include data entry, memory recall, prioritization, map reading, and other related skills. A preparation guide and additional resources are available to assist applicants; details will be provided by the Police Department.
Selection Steps and Background checks
Written examination is required for eligibility. Stringent background investigation including criminal records check, fingerprint check, polygraph examination, toxicology screen, and post-offer medical examination may be required.
