Summary

The Production Unit Manager oversees and coordinates activities within assigned production unit(s) to achieve efficient, cost-effective manufacturing processes that comply with product specifications, Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) and quality standards. The role ensures company policies are interpreted and implemented, and monitors process, quality and production to meet daily, weekly and monthly targets.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure production goals are met within the assigned production unit(s) to meet unit goals and deadlines.
  • Manage daily production unit meetings (Problem Solving Management): resolve HSE, quality, and production problems and review results vs. KPIs with cross-functional departments.
  • Direct and manage Production Group Supervisors and other staff; provide tools, knowledge, and support for success.
  • Develop vision, strategy, and key objectives aligned with company goals and lead by example in execution.
  • Ensure assignments and tasks are completed on time; escalate to supervision if not feasible.
  • Provide insightful leadership to maintain positive morale.
  • Allocate machines and manpower to meet production schedules and ensure on-time delivery.
  • Manage manufacturing to meet deadlines and production goals; manage production to meet monthly budgets.
  • Organize process data using 8D, 5S, Kaizen, Lean, Six-Sigma (DMAIC), VSM, SPC to reduce variation and improve quality/throughput.
  • Maintain preventive maintenance and machine uptime.
  • Devise Departmental Action Plans supporting long-term goals.
  • Assign/schedule work to production employees, including supervisors and manufacturing engineering.
  • Observe equipment usage and employee quality of work; take corrective action when necessary.
  • Monitor tools, materials, quality, and production; drive corrective actions and ensure full problem-solving cycle.
  • Maintain high standards of performance, quality, and customer service for the production unit.
  • Implement company policies and guidelines as prescribed by management.
  • Implement and maintain training for job-related functions.
  • Interview, evaluate, hire, train, motivate, supervise and discipline personnel under direct supervision.
  • Perform personnel functions including coaching for performance, identifying high-potential employees, conducting evaluations, disciplinary actions, and compensation recommendations within guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, Local, and State regulations and LISI Aerospace policies and plans.
  • All employees must attend training, adhere to HSE procedures, report nonconformances, and follow safe operating procedures; lead safety program implementation.
  • Encourage ongoing opportunities to improve HSE performance by setting objectives, measuring progress, and reporting results.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Collaborate with internal and external customers; participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives using Six Sigma and Lean.

Competencies include analytical ability, technical manufacturing knowledge, strong communication (oral and written), teamwork, business acumen, cost consciousness, adaptability, planning/organizing, and professionalism.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Manages Manufacturing Supervisors and other direct staff; conducts interviews, hiring, training, performance appraisals, and disciplinary actions per company policy and law.

Essential Job Requirements

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (Mechanical Engineering preferred) with at least 7 years of management experience in manufacturing or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proven ability to lead effectively in a diverse environment; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Certification/experience in 8D, 5S, Kaizen, Lean, Six-Sigma (DMAIC), VSM, and SPC.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, operations management, process improvement, and industrialization; experience managing projects/action plans.

Skills and Abilities

  • Computer: advanced knowledge of databases, internet software, and Microsoft Office.
  • Language: ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documentation; write reports and procedures; present to groups.
  • Mathematical: statistical concepts, geometry, trigonometry; apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Reasoning: problem definition, data collection, fact establishment, and drawing valid conclusions from complex instructions.
  • Certificates: ITAR compliance (US person) and related requirements.

Physical Demands, Work Environment, Health & Safety

Physical: ability to sit, speak/listen, manual dexterity, occasional standing, walking, lifting up to 10 pounds, and vision/hearing requirements.

Work Environment: manufacturing unit typically loud; reasonable accommodations available. Safety and environmental responsibilities include compliance with safety, environmental, and hazardous materials regulations; mandatory PPE in specified areas.

Fully responsible for implementing safety and environmental rules within the area of responsibility; stop production if hazards appear; coach safety excellence among staff.

Salary: $115,000 - $140,000 annually
