Overview
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a detail-oriented individual to join the Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This group maintains the critical physical infrastructure that supports AWS, ensuring the data center's MEP operates at high availability and delivering first-class customer service to teams within the data centers.
The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment operate at peak efficiency, including planned preventive maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. The CE serves as an expert technical resource for onsite Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third party vendors, acting as a focal point for all facility operations within a data center to support AWS.
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure customers have continual access to our services. Key responsibilities
Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues. Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems (switchgear, generators, UPS, PDUs, power distribution, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, building monitoring systems, etc.).
Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA).
Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and work with the Facility Manager (FM) to set team culture.
Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams.
Assist in the build-out of new facilities and in projects to improve facility efficiency.
Work outside of normal business hours for routine maintenance and respond to out-of-hours emergencies as required.
Communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences.
Coordinate projects with IT managers and business leaders to manage capacity and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency.
Ensure safety procedures are followed by vendors and Amazon staff.
Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations and maintenance.
Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day-to-day tasks.
Physical Requirements
Willingness and demonstrated ability to work in the following physical conditions with reasonable accommodations: regularly lift/move up to 39 pounds; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds; maintain balance and perform construction tasks on a ladder.
Regularly walk, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, lift, grasp, carry, push and pull objects into position.
Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.
Day in the life This role serves as Amazon’s front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. You will maintain, operate, and troubleshoot mission-critical data center facility equipment including standby diesel generators, three-phase electrical systems (switchgear, UPS, PDUs), wet cell batteries, CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, pumps, and motors. You will also support fire/life safety equipment, building automation systems, and general facilities equipment.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications
Technical (military/trade school) training or degree in a relevant field (e.g., electrical or mechanical).
3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
3+ years of data center or mission-critical facilities experience (e.g., hospital, military facility, public safety facility).
Preferred Qualifications
4+ years of data center engineering experience.
Associates or Bachelor’s Degree.
Experience leading a team.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $83,100/year to $185,000/year, depending on location, knowledge, skills, and experience.
