Overview

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a detail-oriented individual to join our Data Center Engineering Operations Team. This team maintains the critical physical infrastructure that supports AWS, ensuring the data center's mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems operate at high availability while delivering first-class customer service to on-site teams. The Data Center Chief Engineer (CE) is responsible for ensuring that all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within the data center operates at peak efficiency. This includes planned preventive maintenance, daily corrective work, and emergency response. The CE serves as a technical resource for on-site Engineering Operations Technicians (EOT) and third-party vendors, acting as a single focal point for facility operations within a data center to support AWS. AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure, including data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that keep the cloud running. You will join a diverse team and collaborate across AWS to uphold safety, security, and efficiency while delivering scalable capacity at a low cost. Responsibilities

Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities-related issues. Oversee operation and management of routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS systems, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, computer room air handlers, and building monitoring systems. Perform root cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot facilities within internal Service Level Agreements (SLA). Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and collaborate with the Facility Manager (FM) to set team culture. Create and deploy new standard practices for Engineering Operations Technicians, Chief Engineers, and vendor support teams. Assist in the build-out of new facilities and participate in projects to increase current facility efficiency. Work outside of normal business hours for routine maintenance as required and respond to out-of-hours emergency calls. Communicate complex technical information to non-technical audiences. Coordinate with IT managers and business leaders to manage projects, capacity, and optimize plant safety, performance, reliability, and efficiency. Ensure all safety procedures are followed by vendors and Amazon staff. Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses, and prepare reports on all aspects of facility operations and maintenance. Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other basic administrative tools for day-to-day tasks. Physical Requirements

Willingness and ability to work in specified physical conditions with reasonable accommodations. Regularly lift and/or move up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds. Maintain balance and perform construction tasks on ladders; regularly walk, use hands, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, climb stairs, bend, and carry objects. Work in environments requiring provided ear protection. A day in the life

This role serves as Amazon’s front line for hands-on electrical and mechanical equipment troubleshooting. Mechanical equipment includes CRAHU units, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, water systems, air handlers, pumps, and motors, plus fire/life safety equipment and building automation systems. The Chief Engineer directs, trains, and supports technicians in hands-on troubleshooting and operations, delivering site- and equipment-specific training exercises. You will manage projects from conception to completion, collaborating with internal and external teams (engineering, automation, processing, finance) in local and global settings. You will create and deliver milestones, obtain quotes, and document outcomes for future facility implementations. Basic Qualifications

Technical (Military/Trade School) training or degree in a relevant field (e.g., electrical, mechanical). 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience. 3+ years of data center or mission-critical facilities experience (e.g., hospital, military facility, public safety facility).
