Soundscape Engineering is seeking an acoustical engineering consultant for our Chicago office. Flexible work conditions are offered including full or part-time hours and the possibility of working from home, in the Chicagoland area.
About Us Soundscape Engineering is an engineering consulting firm that specializes in acoustics and vibrations for building design and construction, environmental assessment, and industrial facilities. The company has offices in Michigan and Illinois. We consult on projects located throughout the United States, but the majority of our projects and clients are located in Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. Soundscape Engineering’s Chicago office was established in 2010.
Duties and Responsibilities
Review and analysis of architectural and engineering designs for new buildings and renovations
Assessment of acoustical problems in existing buildings
Calculations, measurements, and computer modelling related to sound isolation, room acoustics, building MEP system noise and vibration control, and environmental noise impact
Report Writing
Daily collaboration with other Soundscape staff to provide deliverables that meet or exceed clients’ expectations for thoroughness and timeliness in a manner tailored to the needs of the specific client and project
Attend virtual and in-person meetings
Site visits, RFI responses, and submittal reviews during construction administration
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong analytical abilities and proficient technical writing skills
General understanding of the building design and construction process
Good understanding of building mechanical systems
Comfortable and confident in meetings
Experience making sound and vibration measurements
Experience with software including Soundplan, EASE, INSUL, Labview, Excel, NTi Audio Data Explorer, and Price All-In-One or similar
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing projects, priorities, and deadlines
Requires use of personal vehicle for travel when mass transit options are unavailable
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or related field
10 years of experience performing similar work at an acoustical consulting firm
Willingness and ability to obtain P.E. License or INCE Board Certification
Preferred Additional Qualifications
BSE degree from ABET accredited engineering program
P.E. License
INCE Board Certification
Experience working in Chicago market
Physical Demands
Requires periodic travel by air or road and occasional long periods driving.
Frequently involves standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
Carry 40 lbs over uneven terrain, on construction sites, and up stairways to access measurement locations
Occasional climbing of building access ladders and construction site ladders
Operate a computer, sound and vibration measurement equipment, and office machinery.
Frequent verbal and written communication, in English, with colleagues and clients. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
Occasional long days (greater than eight hours) when traveling for meetings, measurements, or site visits
Occasional acoustical measurements on-site during nighttime hours
