This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply. Qualifications

To qualify for this position - you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification Approved residencies: (1) ACGME; (2) AOA; (3) other residencies (non-US residency training with at least five years of verified practice in the United States) as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) and must be fully licensed and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they have a defined scope of practice under supervision Additionally - surgery residents in gap years may be appointed as PRPs Proficiency in spoken and written English Preferred Experience: Demonstrated leadership of a Gastroenterology department in a tertiary level academic setting Administrative experience with program design, development, and implementation; effective resource management Proactive assessment of staffing and equipment needs; Gastroenterology experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings as well as endoscopy procedural expertise Experience supervising trainees; experience with program design, development and implementation Board Certification Physical Requirements: detailed in the job posting (including lifting, carrying, pushing, reaching, vision, hearing, and other listed capabilities) Work environment may include outside and inside settings, exposure to noise, teamwork with others, and variable hours Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive gastroenterology clinical leadership as the Section Chief of Gastroenterology at CAVHS Oversee day-to-day clinical operations in the Gastroenterology Section, including procedural areas Identify and address barriers to high-quality care delivery and patient safety Communicate through the chain of command for issues beyond the section scope Design, develop, grow, and implement the Section business plan; assess staffing, equipment, and space needs Facilitate recruitment, selection, appraisal, and recognition of employees Address performance problems, monitor probationary periods, and manage new hires Direct patient care within the Gastroenterology section; ensure appropriate coverage and establish performance guidelines for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners Assign clinical duties fairly; ensure compliance with VHA standards and accrediting bodies Optimize resources, including staffing and equipment; evaluate new technologies; oversee quality improvement initiatives Monitor staff paperwork, education, and training; oversee future recruitment Supervise clinicians with annual performance evaluations and development of performance goals Regularly monitor access to gastroenterology care and related community costs Review clinic utilization data and related metrics; develop plans to optimize veteran access to care Provide comprehensive patient care in invasive, non-invasive, consultative, inpatient and outpatient settings Perform procedures such as EGD, EGD with peg, colonoscopies, paracentesis, liver biopsy, and other procedures as appropriate Ensure compassionate, appropriate, and effective patient care; promote health, prevention, and treatment of disease Demonstrate commitment to professional development, ethical practice, and diversity Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm, with rotating on-call service Benefits/Notes
